According to the schedules for BBC Radio 3, this coming Saturday's edition of Sound of Cinema has host Matthew Sweet in conversation with Dave Grusin. (As with other programmes in this series, I'm sure it will be available online afterwards) -
Thats funny, was just listening to this. Dave Grusin's all stars live, including famous Japanese saxophonist Sadao Watanabe. This one definitely had his 3 days of the condor vibe
Grusin in his low-key, “smooth jazz” mode was not a style I cared for during my “Hard Bop” 20s, but I’ve loved that sound for years. It’s part 1970s nostalgia for me, but now it’s mostly enjoying that very sound I once disliked!
Will give the Radio 3 show a listen too, once it’s available.
Looking forward to that, James. I've heard other programmes in the series after their initial broadcast, so I'll keep this one in mind.
By the way - I linked to this years ago but can't do it from my spaceship - Does anyone remember Johnny Mandel's delightful fromage to THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR in his Main Titles to THE BALTIMORE BULLET? James Coburn, Omar Sharif, from 1980... YouTube link would be most welcome. I'm coming in to land. See you later.
Quite enjoyed listening to this broadcast yesterday. Maybe would have liked a bit more of Mr Grusin talking, and some of the music examples went on a bit too long, but I suppose they have to strike a balance.
Never knew Dave climbed Mount Everest when in his seventies! At 86 now, he sounds cheerful and out-going. And modest...
Programme is now up for access online, for the next 29 days...
Enjoyed the show, but as a 1970s obsessive, I wish there had been more of an emphasis on Grusin’s “funky” scores. I appluad the effort to “cast their net wide”, so if anyone who wasn’t aware of Grusin’s work learned of him because of this program, then that’s great.
