Marco Beltrami to Score Doug Liman’s ‘Chaos Walking’

Marco Beltrami (3:10 to Yuma, Logan, A Quiet Place, Ford v. Ferrari, The Hurt Locker, Scream, World War Z) has been hired to score the upcoming film adaptation of Patrick Ness’ Chaos Walking. The movie is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) and stars Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Kurt Sutter, Nick Jonas, Cynthia Erivo and David Oyelowo. The movie is based on the novel The Knife of Never Letting Go, the first part of the Chaos Walking trilogy takes place in a world where all women have been killed by a germ and all living creatures can hear one another’s thoughts in a stream of images, words and sounds called The Noise. Doug Davison (American Made, The Strangers) and Erwin Stoff (Constantine, Unbroken) are producing the project. Chaos Walking is set to be released in theaters on January 22, 2021 by Lionsgate.

Listened and not impressed.

Mostly is a mix between a western (the Mads Mikkelsen's bad guy theme is the perfect example or very folkish instrumental moments) and sci-fi (sound design and electronics), the problem is a meh score, is a functional score (in the movie, isn't very impactful and mostly, even can't hear it, is very mixing low) and work only to fitting the movie.

The previous work by Beltrami and Roberts, Underwater, wasn't the best thing ever, but i have more enjoy with that (and the movie was tremendoulsy enjoyable, IMHO) than this, in every aspect.

Frankly, this is the most boring score for an “epic” sci-fi movie I remember hearing. Everything in this score is recycled RCP noises: clock ticks, pulsing synths, percussion, etc. Every cue has the same style, same progression. There is zero personality until the final cue, with only faint attempts at sprinkling some western elements here and there.
