GOLDSMITH AT 20th VOL. 2 – THE DETECTIVE / THE FLIM-FLAM MAN:
LIMITED EDITION LLLCD 1545
Music by Jerry Goldsmith
Limited Edition of 2000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $19.98
La-La Land Records and 20th Century Studios proudly present a new collection of classic Jerry Goldsmith scores for film and television composed for 20th Century Fox: GOLDSMITH AT 20th. Bringing back out-of-print favorites while also debuting previously unreleased music, this collection will feature new authoritative liner notes and unified packaging sure to please avid collectors but also serve as a perfect gateway for listeners experiencing this music for the first time.
Volume 2 serves up the composer’s scores from two ‘60s era feature films – 1968’s police drama THE DETECTIVE, starring Lee Remick, and directed by Gordon Douglas, and 1967’s crime caper THE FLIM-FLAM MAN, starring George C. Scott and Harry Morgan, directed by Irvin Kershner. These two striking Goldsmith scores showcase the composer’s unique versatility during exciting period in his storied career. Whether it’s THE DETECTIVE’s urban jazzy swagger, or THE FLIM-FLAM MAN’s playful and rural rambunctious riffs, the composer is up to the challenge, providing notable music that expertly enhances both films.
Both out-of-print scores return here with all-new art design by Jim Titus and new in-depth liner notes by writer Jeff Bond. The re-issue is produced by Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk, mastered by Daniel Hersch (THE DETECTIVE) and Joe Tarantino (THE FILM-FLAM MAN), and is limited to 2000 units.

Nice pairing. Curious if FFM is sonically improved over the FSM and was there a missing cue from the Intrada Detective that was on the isolated score DVD track? If so is that here?

Yes, from memory, at the time of the previous releases, there was a single cue apparently missing from the "The Detective" session tapes (recorded at a later date, perhaps?). The running time of this release roughly matches previous releases, so it seems the cue has not yet been recovered, at least in non-M & E form. But nearly 19 minutes of a great - and otherwise out-of-print - score is still very much appreciated. Another solid release of some great music!

I can certainly understand MV's attempts to temper expectations regarding this year's Black Friday releases but, to be honest, regardless of all the undoubted issues that must have hampered several of their projects this year, six releases, containing a total of eight titles, is hardly a damp squib. Great stuff!

Was listening to Flim Flam Man recently and although the FSM release sounds perfectly fine I was wondering if some sonic upgrade would be possible, especially given the description in the liner notes of how the various elements had to be stitched back together. I'm assuming LLL re-assembled it. Such a great score.

I've always felt that the previous release of The Detective had a disappointing mix. The Main Title in the film itself has the trumpet and strings much stronger in the mono mix. And in Beach Scene, the electric guitar rift is prominent in the film, but way in the background on the CD.

I have the same issue with every release of Tora Tora Tora as well. The Main Title sounds much better in the film's mono sound, on the CD the choices between what's up front and what's not is different. If choices were possible.

Alas, it is not. In fact there are *two* cues from this score that remain unreleased on CD, but are both present on the Twilight Time Blu-ray isolated score track. "The Execution" falls between "Karen's Story" and "Night Talk" and runs 1:06. This cue is even on the iso track without sound effects, so I can't fathom why it was left off if a 0:51 cue from The Flim-Flam Man was found and added (which I am very grateful for -- I had no idea the FSM release wasn't complete!) The other cue "The Killing" is the more important one however, as the longest cue in the score (3:01) and one underscoring a key moment near the end of the film... and it indeed is on the iso from a music-and-effects source. But I still think with this twofer having a runtime of only 53 minutes, it would have been nice if it had been included even if as a "bonus" track similarly to "A Crushing Affair" which was included from a music and effects source on Intrada's release of The Sand Pebbles:
http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.7333/.f

By sheer coincidence earlier this month on Friday the 13th I submitted it as an entry in Roger Feigelson's fun "That Unreleased Cue" thread on the Intrada forum...see my post of 11:09am if you want to check out the cue on Soundcloud:
http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=8073&start=120

Still, though I am disappointed the two unreleased cues from The Detective weren't included on this however they could be, I will still be buying for that unreleased 51 seconds from The Flim-Flam Man, the hope of improved sound, and perhaps most importantly -- NEW DETAILED JEFF BOND LINER NOTES! smile

Also wondering on this if anyone knows if there is album artwork from the back of this CD available?

Does 'The Detective' sound the same as on the Intrada release? Tempted to pick this up for 'Flim-Flam Man' but curious as to any differences to 'The Detective' which I already have.
