SEASON 1:

A 1968 western television series.

"The High Riders"
By: Jerome Moross
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_VbQffGmoI

This is Moross' only effort for the series.

Un-aired original longer pilot.

Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:51 in.
  • 6:30 in.
  • 9:27 in. Including the first grand statement of the theme.
  • 18:02 in.
  • 19:17 in.
  • 23:14 in.
  • 24:58 in. Ummm ummm ummm, remember when episodes of TV series could be scored like that?
  • 33:52 in.
  • 36:38 in.
  • 39:02 in.
  • 44:27 in.
  • 48:11 in.
  • 49:08 in. Moross' music for the climax runs six and-a-half minutes long.
  • 56:16 in.

While this version of the pilot does not open with the classic series' main theme, it is present in the score later.

I lost track, but I'm sure I cited every single cue.

    "The Highriders"
    By: Hugo Friedhofer
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvdV7HEb1lE

    Shorter re-done pilot.

    Highlights:
  • 0:48 in.
  • 2:15 in.
  • 2:59 in.
  • 4:53 in.
  • 6:27 in.
  • 9:02 in.
  • 17:50 in.
  • 21:29 in.
  • 24:41 in.
  • 29:52 in.
  • 30:53/32:50 in.
  • 36:01 in. Staccato brass and lower octave piano stabs open this cue.
  • 38:22 in.
  • 41:37 in.
  • 42:36 in. Including guiro
  • 43:25 in. Also including some guiro. Horse riding music, action music, drama, and more for just under five minutes.
  • 48:56 in.

Unless I missed something, that's all but four short cues. Hugo was on fire. These producers had good taste; they went from one great composer to another for the pilots.

A rare chance to see how two fantastic composer handle many of the same scenes. The shorter pilot doesn't appear -- I didn't do a complete direct comparison -- to be newly filmed, just edited down and colorized. Moross' music for the fire isn't as driving, and the poor old man being tormented by the bad guys gets scored by Hugo but not by Jerome -- for examples.

    "Blood Rock"
    By: Robert Drasnin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37CzuiPfCxg

    Highlights:
  • 0:53 in.
  • 3:05 in.
  • 5:30 in.
  • 8:00 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 17:20 in.
  • 25:51 in.
  • 29:12 in.
  • 31:27 in.
  • 33:06 in.
  • 38:30 in.
  • 40:47 in.
  • 44:12 in.
  • 44:59 in.
  • 49:06 in.

If I were compiling a set of season one scoring, I'd skip the first two and the 31:27 highlight.

    "Chase a Wild Horse"
    By: Leith Stevens
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqRzs1QQJBM

  • 14:09 in.
  • 17:36 in.
  • 19:43 in.
  • 23:39 in.
  • 27:33 in.
  • 29:30 in.
  • 31:37 in.
  • 32:27 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 35:39 in.
  • 41:11 in.
  • 45:22 in.
  • 47:13 in.
  • 48:59 in.

    "Foley"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80lKDnpaGq4

    Highlights:

  • 1:43 in.

  • 19:16 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 23:12 in.
  • 27:48 in.
  • 29:41 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 32:05 in.
  • 34:43 in.
  • 38:58 in.
  • 41:25 in.
  • 43:59 in.
  • 47:46 in. Opens with a solo harp, then strings take over.

That's all but maybe five cues.

    "The Lawman"
    By: Leith Stevens
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqmO4deiYcM

    Highlights:
  • 2:12 in.
  • 5:52 in.
  • 6:23 in.
  • 9:49 in.*
  • 12:42 in. Playful material that would have been right at home for that "Wagon Train" character in the "Wagon Train" show.
  • 17:02 in. More such material as above.
  • About 22:41 in.
  • 28:23 in.
  • 29:36 in.
  • 30:53 in.
  • 34:29 in.
  • 35:57 in.
  • 38:04 in.
  • 41:00 in.
  • 45:55 in.
  • 49:08 in. Joining a cue already in progress.

    * = You know, it would have been really nice had that been the character from "Wagon Train".

    "Last Train for Charlie Poe"

If I were compiling a set of season one scoring, I'd only chose the cues cited above.

    Highlights:
  • 0:47 in.
  • 1:43 in.

  • 16:22 in.
  • 18:51 in.

  • 38:57 in.
  • 42:42 in.

According to his IMDb credits, this is the last thing he scored.

    "The Fix-It Man"
    By: Robert Drasnin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XZ7xbRpZmw

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in.

  • 38:19 in.
  • 40:52 in.
  • 42:04 in. Under six minutes long.

Stevens should have gotten at least an Emmy nomination for this episode score. He was on fire here. I cited nearly everything, except a few short cues.

    Finishing SEASON 1:

Please note, since I didn't mention it earlier, if I didn't list an episode, it had no credited composer. There were very few with no credited composer.

  • 26:33 in.
  • 30:59 in.
  • 33:05 in.
  • 42:15 in. Unless I am mistaken, I think about five or so seconds is tracked into this cue from that Courage score I praised an update ago.
  • 48:10 in.

    (NTM: 38:42)

    "The Knot"
    By: Joseph Mullendore

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in.
  • 1:24 in.
  • 4:18 in.
  • 10:14 in.
  • 13:37 in. I like that variation on the series' main theme that opens the cue.

    SEASON 2:

    "Blind Man's Bluff"
    By: Robert Drasnin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIqakNlS2uI

    Highlights:
  • 5:36 in.
  • 8:53 in.
  • 12:46 in.+
  • 16:27 in.
  • 19:56 in. And the dramatic cue after the commercial break.
  • 26:45 in.
  • 29:49 in.
  • 34:32 in.
  • 40:23 in.
  • 47:38 in.

I like the new premise: We've had characters in TV series who lose their vision temporarily and have to have help, but this is the only time I recall seeing this happen where the person who comes to the aide is a mute.

    "Zee"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6UJh_yd8Tk

    Highlights:
  • 0:48 in. Goldsmith isn't the only one who can write spirited music for the young.
  • 1:59 in.
  • 3:26/4:22 in.
  • 7:09 in.
  • 9:43 in.
  • 11:00 in.
  • 12:17 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 21:35 in.
  • 30:07 in.
  • 32:01 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 36:20 in.
  • 38:24 in.
  • 39:55 in.
  • 43:29 in.
  • 46:07 in.
  • 48:44 in.

I cited everything but three cues. What a delightful whimsical score.

    "The Kid"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iny_rGJEvaY

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in.
  • 7:10 in.
  • 8:32 in.
  • 9:43 in.
  • 14:19 in. And the cue after the commercial break that in the open reminds me of Horner.
  • 17:46 in.
  • 19:06 in.
  • 22:01 in.
  • 24:41 in.
  • 26:35 in.
  • 28:46 in. Love that horse-riding music with wooden blocks.
  • 31:00 in.
  • 33:18 in.
  • 34:22 in.
  • 36:21 in.
  • 38:22 in.
  • 41:04 in. For around ten or so seconds, he does what Horner did "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" with staccato brass hits in an unusual pattern.
  • 47:22 in.

    This is a good episode.

Lancer: "You know, it's easy to kill a man, but it's impossible to bring him back to life again."

    "The Black Angel"
    By: Fred Steiner
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9KqKaInrTo

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in.
  • 3:32 in.
  • 8:39 in.
  • 12:16 in.
  • 15:29 in.
  • 18:11 in. There are three or four seconds when it pauses, then picks back up.
  • 22:48 in.
  • 25:37 in.
  • 28:57 in.
  • 31:37 in.
  • 35:11 in.
  • 37:46 in.
  • 40:59 in.
  • 42:59 in.
  • 47:22 in.
  • 48:30 in.

Good score and Steiner fits right in. Sadly, the show only had two seasons so there wasn't more time for him to score a bunch of episodes.

Now there's a bad guy commupence I like.

Jelly: "Well, if you're interested, this old fool like to buy another old fool a beer."

    "The Gifts"
    By: Robert Drasnin (uncredited)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsG75sbV3Ks

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in.
  • 6:14 in.
  • 13:35 in. I think some Courage score from that episode score I praised of is, is tracked into this cue. Hard to miss that distinctive four-note motif.
  • 20:08 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 23:22 in.
  • 26:41 in.
  • 29:44 in.
  • 34:27 in.
  • 37:58 in.
  • 40:56 in.
  • 45:00 in.
  • 46:37 in.

    Continuing SEASON 2:

Please note that if I list a composer as uncredited, it's merely that way because a composer was listed on the episode's IMDb page; somebody went through and apparently just messed with the composer credits; uncredited composers, wrong composers on episodes. Thanks a lot, idiot.

    "Cut the Wolf Loose"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvZJvC7NLeM

    Highlights:
  • 2:41 in.
  • 11:17 in.
  • 16:59 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 19:04 in.
  • 27:53 in.
  • 34:15 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 41:49 in.
  • 43:48 in.
  • 47:02 in.
  • 49:10 in.

For what ever reason, it sounds like Mullendore was inspired by this episode. Surely one of his best efforts to any project he worked on.

    "Jelly Hoskins' American Dream"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHaiN3Mu1AM

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in.
  • 5:35 in.
  • 14:51/16:44/48:22 in. Second part continues after the commercial break.
  • 19:49 in.
  • 24:45 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 28:56 in.
  • 37:38 in.
  • 39:41 in.
  • 44:01 in.
  • 45:40 in.

Another score where it sounds like Mullendore was inspired. I think I cited everything but one or two cues.

    "Welcome to Genesis"
    By: Leith Stevens (uncredited)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImTAtBWNJbc

This is the final effort by Stevens for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 1:00 in. Doesn't really get kicking until 2:55 in. (Note to me: episode start)
  • 4:56 in.
  • 12:42 in.
  • 18:26 in.
  • 37:15 in.
  • 45:35 in.
  • 47:13 in.
  • 48:52 in.

On a set of season two scoring, I'm not sure how much of this I'd include.

  • 49:02 in.

    "A Scarecrow at Hacket's"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k26haXwndCw

    Highlights:
  • 0:45 in.
  • 3:51 in.

  • 19:49 in.

  • 34:25 in.
  • 39:25 in.
  • 43:11 in.

  • 49:21 in.

A more moody and dark Horner-esque score (except the last highlight).

  • 22:30 in.
  • 24:58 in.
  • 27:52 in.
  • 29:22 in.

    "Blue Skies for Willie Sharpe"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIL79v0t9B0 (part of the opening credits is missing)

    Highlights:
  • 0:39 in.
  • 1:39 in.
  • 6:20 in.
  • 8:00 in.
  • 9:31 in.
  • 10:40 in.

  • 18:43 in.
  • 21:54 in.
  • 23:44 in.
  • 24:51 in.
  • 31:01 in.
  • 35:37 in.
  • 39:31 in.
  • 41:44 in.
  • 46:10 in.

A lot of low-key feel good string heavy cues, with only the last one bringing some real drama.

    "Chad"
    By: Robert Drasnin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-u-bwoLu8s

This is the final effort by Drasnin for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in.
  • 4:29 in.
  • 7:45 in.
  • 10:20 in.
  • 13:00 in.
  • 15:28 in.
  • 18:00 in.
  • 23:26 in.
  • 27:25 in.
  • 31:01 in.
  • 39:44 in.
  • 44:54 in.

    "The Lorelei"
    By: Arthur Morton
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WajhGqeZjd4 (part of the opening credits is missing)

This is the only effort by Morton for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:42 in. Dramatic-sounding cue lead by snare drum and brass.
  • 3:34 in.
  • 6:20 in.
  • 8:39 in.
  • 11:52 in. More snare and brass; more driving than necessarily dramatic.
  • 13:55 in.
  • 14:57 in.
  • 16:18 in.
  • 18:08 in.
  • 19:58 in.
  • 23:04 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 25:28 in. Playful material for Jelly.
  • 28:46 in. Playful material for Jelly.
  • 32:17 in.
  • 34:31 in.
  • 40:00 in.
  • 45:57 in.

At times I hear hints of Goldsmith. I think Morton's abilities rubbed off on Jerry early on.

    "The Lion and the Lamb"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTnVPMUp-uc

    Highlights:
  • 0:49 in.
  • 6:57 in.
  • 10:46 in.
  • 12:54 in.
  • 19:30 in.
  • 23:04 in.
  • 25:45 in.
  • 27:59 in.
  • 33:36 in.
  • 35:01 in.
  • 39:04 in.
  • 42:24 in.
  • 46:41 in.
  • 47:50 in.

    "Lamp in the Wilderness"
    By: Fred Steiner
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms7FWExTLb0

This is the final effort by Steiner for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 5:15 in.
  • 10:06 in.
  • 19:42 in.
  • 27:58 in.
  • 30:44 in.
  • 35:29 in.
  • 40:06 in. Including fight music.
  • 42:55 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 45:04 in.
  • 46:36 in. A combo I've never heard before: an orchestral arrangement of the song "America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee)" with Indian percussion underneath.
  • 48:15 in.

I'm tempted to say Steiner should have gotten an Emmy nomination for the score.

I like the way Steiner included a beat to indicate Indians, in the first two cues but without any menacing connotations.
I can't advocate for a full release of the episode score, but certainly I would for any cue I highlighted. But I did, however, cite somewhere over 95% of the score anyway, so no big deal.

This episode set up what could have been an interesting premise: having the Indians kids being taught at Lancer ranch until the new school is built, which could have yielded some good stories, sadly, there are only three episodes remaining and I bet they all squander that.

"Pay your respects to the livin' friend, he won't know."

"...others were taught a lesson they could not learn because they were dead."

Indian Boy: "One day this will all be different; I can write my name."

    Tomorrow I conclude the series.
Two one-off composers and one final Mullendore effort.

    Finishing SEASON 2:

    "The Buscaderos"
    By: Sidney Fine (uncredited)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxi8l-hkISk

This is the only effort by Fine for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in.
  • 2:41 in.
  • 5:18 in.
  • 11:27 in.
  • 15:31 in.
  • 18:11 in.
  • 21:40 in. Including some synth sounds (I think this is a first for the series scoring, synths).
  • 24:33 in.
  • 26:41 in. Sounds like a small bit of that Courage score is tracked into the cue; boy, the producers sure loved that one. I also hear some in the next cue below. Unless I am wrong and Fine is simply re-using that distinctive four-note motif and general ideas, which is possible I guess.
  • 33:58 in.
  • 38:25 in.
  • 42:48 in.
  • 45:34 in.
  • 49:01 in.

"Cheer up, Murdock, tax day only comes once a year."

    "Dream of Falcons"
    By: Joseph Mullendore
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd01DTuiP7A

    Highlights:
  • 0:46 in. Lightly whimsical, with a banjo thrown in.
  • 1:36 in.
  • 4:51 in.
  • 6:25 in.
  • 9:18 in.
  • 12:22 in.
  • 14:53 in.
  • 18:59 in.
  • 25:17 in.
  • 26:53 in.
  • 28:47 in.
  • 32:57 in.
  • 34:43 in.
  • 36:25 in.
  • 38:35 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 41:22 in. Five and-a-half minutes long.
  • 47:30 in.

Unless I am mis-remembering or missed something, I think I cited all but one cue. Mullendore sounds inspired again, to a very slightly lesser extent.

    "Lifeline (series finale)
    By: George Duning
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOQlvw1Bvow (unfortunately the sound is almost completely in the left channel)

This is the only effort by Duning for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 4:30 in.
  • 13:25 in.
  • 14:55 in.
  • 17:18 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 20:11 in.
  • 24:52 in.
  • 28:59 in.
  • 32:08 in.
  • 36:36 in.
  • 38:01 in. And the dramatic cue after the commercial break.
  • 43:28 in.
  • 46:47 in.
  • 49:19 in.

On a set of season two scoring, I'm not sure how much of this I would include, simply because of other episodes this season with so many great cues in them. Make room for better material, is my motto.

The "mask of death" in this case turned out to be cancellation.

By pure coincidence, you'll see nearly all the composers from this series, on another series I plan to cover soon.

Next up: the second of the three "L" western series.

UNCREDITED, ADDITIONAL, and POSSIBLY CREATED COMPOSERS:

Taken from ASCAP and BMI. In no special order:

  • Harry Sukman.
  • Benjamin Weisman and Carey Wilbur.
  • Urban Thielmann. (Urban was a musician and orchestra contractors; he contracted some of Jerry Goldsmith's film scores, for example)

I wonder if the lack of more composers means one or both of the following: uncredited original scoring (if only partials) to some episodes and track jobs of pre-existing episode scores to the show instead of other shows.

There has of course been no release of the show's scoring.
