Wonderful news, though only releasing on CD is puzzling. I'm guessing the track will eventually emerge on a CD.

Has anyone purchased this?

I cannot find any uploads or clips to hear what this version of Lion in Winter sounds like.

While I would love to see someone release this--the flip side to JB's CBS Lion in Winter single with Alan Haven on organ, I don't think this is the track that was released. Wonderful and dreamy version of "The Herb Garden," though.

JB recorded the Lion in Winter for The Concert John Barry. That is probably the version released by Uni France.

Exactly. This is the version I am looking for.

Bond1965, Thank you for posting that! We now know what Lion in Winter music sounds like without chorus, as John Barry would have done it.

I thought it sounded really good, very interesting. He probably left it off the album because without the chorus, he probably thought the best version was already recorded for the soundtrack. Still, if Uni ever re-releases the Concert John Barry, they should add this and Zulu (also recorded for the album), if they can find it.

Many thanks for the upload.

The suite sounds good, but way too short, and thus it sounds a bit disjointed. The film's score certainly lent itself to a more generous and elaborate suite, but there must've been time restrictions, or who knows?

Either way, this is a fascinating take on what is without doubt one of Barry's greatest scores. Too bad he didn't have a choir available with the RPO.

A common Lion in Winter suite has three parts: Main Title, Chinon-Eleanor's Arrival--We're Jungle Creatures. For awhile there was a live performance on youtube of this suite by the BBC Orchestra/choris conducted by Rumon Gamba. Now I can only find the Main Title.

I've always thought that "The Herb Garden" is beautiful.

It is, indeed.

And the a cappella pieces are all gems.

Too bad Barry only composed but a small handful of choral music.

I cannot believe I missed that Rumon Gamba performance of the suite. I just watched the Main Title excerpt from that same concert. There is no mention of what BBC orchestra Gamba's conducting. It could be his usual working orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic or the BBC Concert Orchestra. Gamba did a great job.

Thank you, Greg!

It was surreal to conduct those (and premiere "A christmas song"), especially considering how young I was (what memories!).

Lately I have been more focused on research and writing (I have a book about Barry's music in the works), but i'm hopeful about conducting again some day.

I'll keep you guys tuned!

Interesting. I thought Barry never recorded any part of Zulu again.
