Sending positive vibes.

His Jobim tribute album with the Morelenbaums is a real favorite.

Oh, shucks. He has previously batted cancer (in his throat, I believe?), and now here's another bout. Hoping for the best!

Absolutely all the very best to him in this awful situation. I was a big fan of him as a musician anyway and my admiration increased after seeing a documentary on NHK about his part in rescuing and restoring a piano that was damaged in the earthquake a decade ago as a spiritual reminder.

It's the second time he's battling cancer. I really hope he wins this battle again.

I saw WILD PALMS in first run on ABC; ran out and bought the CD. And I still play "Harry to Hospital" on a semi-regular basis.

Not an expert on his non-film work, but am very fond of his scores for THE LAST EMPEROR, WILD PALMS, THE SHELTERING SKY, and FEMME FATALE. I remember THE REVENANT being very effective in the film as well. This is awful news and I hope he recovers.

Very sad to read this, huge fan of his music.

How sad. The Wings of Honnêamise, Wild Palms... Wonderful music. I hope things go well. This year is devestating enough without news like this.

Same. Saw on first run on ABC. Ran out and bought the CD right around then. I loved the opening title. I’ll have to check out Harry to hospital again.

Yes, RUYICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA from a couple of years ago is a brilliant documentary, and - like you - it re-ignited my interest in his work.

No one should have to endure such a hardship even once, never mind twice.
I hope he turns out okay--he is SUCH a cool guy.

Not too long ago I read an interview where he talked about his dream of re-scoring all the Yasujiro Ozu films, possibly in collaboration with Takemitsu.
Too late, of course, for that collaboration, but can you imagine how amazing that would have been?*
I hope it's something Sakamoto still pursues if he can, even if it's just solo--even if it's just "Tokyo Story".

(*Not that there's at all anything wrong with Ozu's original films' scores.)

Anyone have the Jobim album I mentioned?

It was recorded at Jobim's place with Sakamoto on piano.

After you mentioned it (an album that I never heard of, and I have quite a lot of Sakamoto-albums), I traced down a copy on eBay from Japan and ordered it immediately. It sounds very intriguing and without hearing a single note I decided I needed it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. The friendly seller shipped it out the very same day I ordered it. I can't wait to hear this, I love both Sakamoto and Jobim.

It is beautiful. Recorded in Jobim's house, on Jobim's piano. While there are a few familiar favorites, the group plays some rarities, including IIRC some things that had not been commercially released prior.

Just received the album today in the mailbox, that was quick from Japan! I really love it, right down my alley (as I expected). I recognised some songs that Astrud Gilberto had done, mostly in English though. Nice to hear the Portugese lyrics, overall a very pleasant listen. Thanks so much for the tip!
