Not an expert on his non-film work, but am very fond of his scores for THE LAST EMPEROR, WILD PALMS, THE SHELTERING SKY, and FEMME FATALE. I remember THE REVENANT being very effective in the film as well. This is awful news and I hope he recovers.

Yes, RUYICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA from a couple of years ago is a brilliant documentary, and - like you - it re-ignited my interest in his work.
No one should have to endure such a hardship even once, never mind twice. I hope he turns out okay--he is SUCH a cool guy.
Not too long ago I read an interview where he talked about his dream of re-scoring all the Yasujiro Ozu films, possibly in collaboration with Takemitsu. Too late, of course, for that collaboration, but can you imagine how amazing that would have been?* I hope it's something Sakamoto still pursues if he can, even if it's just solo--even if it's just "Tokyo Story".
(*Not that there's at all anything wrong with Ozu's original films' scores.)

It is beautiful. Recorded in Jobim's house, on Jobim's piano. While there are a few familiar favorites, the group plays some rarities, including IIRC some things that had not been commercially released prior.
Just received the album today in the mailbox, that was quick from Japan! I really love it, right down my alley (as I expected). I recognised some songs that Astrud Gilberto had done, mostly in English though. Nice to hear the Portugese lyrics, overall a very pleasant listen. Thanks so much for the tip!
