Feel free to point out if a thread has already been made about this.

Basically I’m asking about favorite musical interpretation of the Requiem mass (Britten’s War Requiem counts since it uses the text). My favorite would have to be the Verdi Requiem followed by Mozart’s, with the War Requiem in third.

My favorite recording of the Verdi Requiem:

I would say Verdi as well. I think Andrew Lloyd Webber's is good too. Certainly has some fine moments. And the good news is he's working on a new recording and orchestration of it.

Verdi is tops, but I also love the Faure and the Britten.

My favorite is the one by Maurice Duruflé. It’s hard to beat the version with the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus, Robert Shaw conducting. Here’s a sample:

There are of course many great version so the Requiem Mass... I enjoy many of them, but particular favorites are Mozart's Requiem and Brahms' Requiem... If I could have only one Requiem, it would be Brahms', (which is unusual though since is not a setting of the traditional mass text, but Brahms' selected passages from scripture).

But of course, Verdi, Berlioz, Britten, Fauré... great music; Requiems seem to inspire a lot of composers to write some of their finest music.

Berlioz, Britten, Faure, Durufle, Burgon. I've never warmed to the Verdi but it may be the only recording I have is somehow lacking (Shaw on Telarc).

Some of my favorite Requiems are not based upon the Mass ...

1. Renaud Gagneux's 1982 REQUIEM for 2 Sopranos, Orchestra & Chorus
2. Gyorgy Ligeti's 1965 REQUIEM for Soprano, Mezzo-soprano, Choir & Orchestra
3. Andrew Imbrie's 1984 REQUIEM for Soprano, Singers & Symphony
4. Vagn Holmboe's REQUIEM FOR NIETZSCHE (1963-'64) for Tenor, Baritone, Orchestra & Choir
5. REQUIEM Opus 39 for Baritone, String Quartet, Orchestra & Chorus by Wilfred Josephs (1963)

... so here are some Masses, too.

1. Gilbert Amy's 1983 Missa cum jubilo
2. Andre Caplet's 1920 Messe a Trois Voix
3. Andre Jolivet's 1962 Missa Uxor Tua
4. Maurice Ohana's 1977 Messe
5. Christopher Young's score for Bless the Child (2000), the soundtrack of which is organized into 5 tracks patterned after the Mass.

That's the WORST recording of the Verdi, IMO. The Fritz Reiner is amazing and I also like the Leinsdorf and the Ormandy - those are my go-tos.
