The UK’s Ipswich Film Theatre, The Legacy of John Williams and The Goldsmith Odyssey launch SCORE MASTERS, an ongoing celebration of film music commencing with a celebration of composers John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith.
February marks the birth month of film composers John Williams and the late Jerry Goldsmith. Ipswich Film Theatre was due to celebrate with a special weekend of films devoted to the work of both artists, but due to the UK's national shutdown it was necessary to cancel this weekend.
We’re delighted to confirm that the companion online programme will still be broadcast.
SCORE MASTERS commences a regular strand celebrating the art of film scoring and we're delighted to launch with the support of The Legacy of John Williams and The Goldsmith Odyssey. In our exclusive opening event celebrating the work of film composers John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial) and Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen, Planet of the Apes, Total Recall), we are joined in discussion by some of the most creative and talented artists working in the field: Academy Award®-nominated composer David Newman (Galaxy Quest, Ice Age, Anastasia), Grammy® award-winning conductor Leonard Slatkin (Music Director Laureate of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra), legendary music recording engineer Bruce Botnick (known for his work with The Beach Boys and The Doors, as well as both Williams and Goldsmith), soundtrack record producer Michael Matessino (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Harry Potter: The John Williams Soundtrack Collection), writer and journalist Jeff Bond (Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Art and Visual Effects, Danse Macabre: 25 Years of Danny Elfman and Tim Burton), composer Leanna Primiani, and pianist/keyboardist Mike Lang, who has worked extensively with both Williams and Goldsmith.
Moderators are Maurizio Caschetto(The Legacy of John Williams), Yavar Moradi & W. David Lichty(The Goldsmith Odyssey) and Tim Burden(Board member of the Film Music Foundation).

Man, I've never been to Ipswich, but if ever there was ever gonna be a good reason to visit there, this would have been it. I would have happily booked a night or two in a local hotel and attended all the films and seminars that were planned. Fuck this pandemic!!!
Great idea and initiative nonetheless. Sounds like a fantastic event is planned.

Thanks Kev! I manage the Film Theatre and it's great to hear this support. We've got our eyes on 2022... but we're glad to open virtually with such great partners this year.

Can this only be watched live or will it be available after? It's a little late for me but I'll probably stay up for it if it's the only option.
It not only need not be seen live, it can't be! It has already been recorded, and is being polished up for its release, sound clean-up, glitch editing, etc. It will appear on YouTube next Monday, and will remain available presumably until the sun burns out? I think that's the plan.

His parents, Eleanor and Felix Slatkin, were distinguished studio musicians in Hollywood orchestras since the 1930s and also acclaimed classical performers of the Hollywood String Quartet. Leonard met Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams when they were still young, up-and-coming composers, and maintained a fruitful artistic relationship and personal friendship with both, championing their music in the concert hall.

You can also follow the event at thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com, as I will embed and stream the video from my website as well.
Of course it will remain available to watch at any time right afterwards, so if you cannot tune in for the Monday premiere you can watch it at a later date.
I'm happy and honoured to have co-produced this event and I cannot wait for everyone to see it. All Williams and Goldsmith fans are in for a real treat.
Looking forward to this. I live in a little village just outside Ipswich and would have revelled in the live event. Having retired just pre-pandemic I must join the Film Theatre immediately, ready for re-opening!

Leanna is a musical storyteller and started out as a conductor, with credits including the National Symphony and LA Opera. Leanna channeled her kinesthetic experience of music-making as a conductor into her writing, with her music being championed by the Nashville Symphony, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and the Centre de Création Musicale Iannis Xenakis in Paris.
Taking her story-telling further, she composes for film and television. Credits include the WIF/Fox Searchlight production of "Signal", as well as the remake of the cult classic The Bad Seed, directed by and starring Rob Lowe.
Her classical training and background link her to the tradition of great Hollywood composers she deeply admires like Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams.
Leanna will offer a refreshing point of view on the art and legacy of both composers in SCORE MASTERS, an online tribute event to Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams premiering Monday February 8 on Ipswich Film Theatre's YouTube Channel.
