A 1972 TV series.

As I recall reading, many episodes are lost, but all these appear to be recorded off TV, so I assume these seasons exist or have since been found.

Only seasons three and four are up.

SEASON 3:

If I don't mention an episode, that means no composer was credited.

This is not the entire season -- too many episode scores to do in one day.

"An Ugly Way to Die"
By: Laurence Rosenthal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3VpWQsYqmI
Score suite: https://youtube.com/watch?v=SLai-YsMdW8/edit

This is Rosenthal's final effort for the show.

Highlights:
  • 2:36 in.
  • 13:56 in.
  • 17:29 in.
  • 19:53 in.
  • 34:00 in. Chase music, with opening tense material.
  • 41:15 in.
  • 44:42 in.

On a set of season three scoring, I'd probably just take the last three cues only.

    "Key Witness"
By: Jack Elliot & Allyn Ferguson
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6CIIjdxxDQ
    Score suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGol7GsDwnw

  • 24:00 in.
  • 27:43 in.
  • 32:25 in.
  • 35:11 in.
  • 38:43 in.
  • 39:55 in.
  • 42:48 in. Joining a cue already in progress.

    "Legacy of Death"
    By: Robert Drasnin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0EZHiD31YU
    Score suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ji3UuBsfcQ

  • 18:17 in.
  • 26:33 in.

  • 31:48 in.
  • 33:03 in.
  • 34:02 in.
  • 38:31 in.
  • 39:41 in.
  • 41:38 in.

    Out-of-context quote...
    "Good, I like eager beavers."

    "Death at 6 A.M."
By: Murray MacLeod (as "The Orphanage")
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vofqXEFAZe8
    Score suite: https://youtube.com/watch?v=Jy-0ClIrxU8/edit

This is presumably -- as the IMDb composer credits for the show are not full and I had to add a number myself -- MacLeod's only solo effort.

    Highlights:
  • 1:51 in.
  • 3:37 in. Some country flavor.
  • 7:20 in.
  • 9:51 in.
  • 12:18 in.
  • 23:09 in.
  • 32:51 in.
  • 35:40 in. Twangy country flavor.

    "Walk a Tightrope"
By: Jack Elliot & Allyn Ferguson
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy-j93oJydQ
    Score suite:

    Highlights:
  • 1:05 in.
  • 1:34 in.
  • 3:02 in.
  • 5:11 in.
  • 11:38 in.
  • 13:29 in. Funky.
  • 15:34/18:33 in.
  • 23:00 in.
  • 25:16 in.
  • 26:38 in.
  • 31:27 in.
  • 32:40 in. Gonna be sweet to have this cue without SFX one day.
  • 34:28 in.
  • 38:31 in.
  • 40:05 in. Light funky beat.
  • 41:30 in.
  • 43:27 in. And the cue after the commercial break, which just naturally goes with the proceeding cue.

29:39 in: What's the name/composer of that classical music? I'm assuming it's not original scoring.

    "Judgment"
By: Jack Elliot & Allyn Ferguson

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqts-vQgJuY

This is presumably Johnson's only effort for the show.

    Highlights:
  • 1:07 in.

  • 9:24 in.
  • 10:52 in. And the cue after the commercial break.

  • 31:02 in.
  • 32:40 in. About thirty seconds in it gets funky, for those who are impatient.
  • 35:04 in.
  • 37:01 in. And the cue after the commercial break. Low key moody stuff.
  • 39:45 in.
  • 40:25 in.

  • 26:46 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 29:34 in.
  • 31:59 in.
  • 34:28 in.
  • 35:45 in. Light funky stuff. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 38:47/40:21 in. 42:01 in for those impatient.
  • 44:38 in.

    "The Assassin"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SikftOlTkuo
    Score suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVBS6JD1qm0

This is presumably Parker's only effort for the show.

  • 8:19 in. Including some cool car chase music. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 16:07 in.
  • 18:26 in.
  • 19:55 in. That three-note repeating trumpet chords are right out of his score to the film "Witches Brew".

    Finishing SEASON 3:

    "Blue Christmas"
    By: Pete Rugolo
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQyE_Pes_t4
    Score suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKR9g4UuWxs

This is presumably Rugolo's final effort for the series. I don't know if anybody is credited for the season four opener (no load), so I can't say for sure. EDIT: Found the season four opener -- no composer credited, but I still have the two-parter left to solve.

    Highlights:
  • 1:05 in. Warm Christmas fuzzies with a Christmas classic.
  • 4:28 in.
  • 7:22 in.

  • 15:58 in. Another Christmas classic.
  • 22:19 in.

  • 39:51 in.
  • 42:28 in.
  • 44:22 in.

    "The Hunting Ground"
By: James Prigmore & Murray McLeod

  • 24:25 in.
  • 31:39 in.
  • 34:19 in.

    SEASON 4:

As usual, if you don't see an episode listed, that means there was no credited composer.

    Continuing SEASON 4:

    "Death Lady"
    By: George Romanis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gXuj7GWeVs (part of the opening credits is cut out)

    Highlights:
  • 0:29 in.
  • 2:53 in. With a brass idea from his one episode score to "CHiPs".
  • 5:46 in.
  • 8:07 in.
  • 18:34 in.

  • 17:55 in.
  • 41:09 in.

This is the weakest score of both season three and season four. On a set of season four scoring I'd only include the last highlight. Nothing else needs to be taken from this episode score.

    "Invitation to a Rumble"

    Highlights:
  • 1:05 in.

  • 10:14 in.
  • 11:22 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 16:30 in.
  • 19:15 in. This cue has three sections, each with a different musical style. And the bar source cue that immediately follows it (yeah right, like a bar like that is playing music like this in real life...). And the score cue that follows the source cue. Expect to spend about six minutes listening.
  • 26:33 in.
  • 30:10 in.
  • 31:51 in.
  • 32:41 in.

    Finishing SEASON 4:

    "The Voice of Thunder"
    By: Robert Drasnin
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esMhLAO8uOo

    Highlights:
  • 1:34 in. Reminds me of part of a cue from "Star Trek: IV: The Voyage Home". After two or three seconds, the cue then continues. Even the woodwind theme sounds like Rosenman.
  • 4:05 in.
  • 5:09 in.
  • 8:52 in.
  • 10:01 in.
  • 16:38 in.
  • 19:06 in.

  • 34:32 in.
  • 39:14 in.
  • 41:11 in.

    What a terrible episode.

I had to check the end credits just to make sure Drasnin was in fact the credited composer. Just a little too much Rosenman in many cues. Speculation: I guess it's possible both composer drew inspiration from the same classical piece I don't know.

    "The Code Five Affair"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwCh4bDBjWY (most of the opening credits is cut out)

Sorry, this load has skips in the audio sometimes; it's not you, it's the load.

This is the final effort by Romanis for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 2:48 in.
  • 3:39 in.
  • 7:45 in. Funky.
  • 11:10 in.
  • 13:40 in. The restaurant source music.
  • 17:13 in.
  • 19:12 in. Funky.
  • 26:21 in.
  • 27:22 in.
  • 31:25 in.
  • 39:05 in. Skip to about forty seconds in, for those impatient and want the funky stuff.
  • 42:35 in. And the cue after the commercial break.

    "Eye for an Eye"
    By: Duane Tatro
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u44qBY1oP78

  • 26:35 in.
  • 28:50 in.
  • 32:20 in. Short cue.

  • 36:58 in.
  • 40:13 in.
  • 42:33 in.
  • 44:46 in.

"Sudden Death" (A.K.A.: "Return from the Past")
    By: Shorty Rogers
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhVIcxZx-mA

    Highlights:
  • 1:05 in. Upbeat cue.
  • 3:04 in.
  • 7:40 in.
  • 8:35 in.
  • 12:08 in.
  • 13:47 in. A low-key cue to a long slow scene, which Rogers manages to make a compelling listen.
  • 19:32 in. With the super rare appearance of anklungs in the score to an episode of any TV series (very briefly used). And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 23:41 in.
  • 25:33 in.
  • 29:41 in.
  • 32:37 in.
  • 36:16 in.
  • 37:36 in.
  • 42:11/43:08 in.

    "From Out of the Darkness"
    By: Mark Snow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ts4Prm7VmI (part of the opening credits is cut out)

    Highlights:
  • 1:25 in.
  • 3;55 in.
  • 6:56 in.
  • 12:55 in.
  • 18:05 in.
  • 18:56 in.
  • 20:03 in. And the bar source music that immediately follows it. Another example of a piece of music that's played in no real bar like seen) anywhere ever. And the score cue that immediately follows the source cue.
  • 25:45 in.
  • 27:47 in.
  • 29:30 in.
  • 31:15 in.

Final credited score of the series.

"It's a safe bet one of 'em is gonna end up on the slab."

And that's that for now -- none of seasons one or two are up.

    SEASON 1:

Doubling back to season one, which was not online when I started the thread. Season two is still not up and the composer credits for that season are incomplete on IMDb.

Suites for all episodes scored by Bernstein, have been recorded and are being edited. Getting close to putting one up in maybe two weeks. Depending on the flash drive space, I would like to cover the rest of the season.

    The Rookies (feature-length pilot)
    NO COMPOSER CREDITED

    Highlights:
  • 1:06 in.
  • 6:12 in. The club source music.^
  • 28:33 in. Cute kitten alert.

  • 54:49 in.^
  • 56:25 in.

Unfortunately, this was another case of assuming the IMDb credit was right and covering highlights. But no composer, including Elmer Bernstein as credited for it on IMDb, is credited. Rather than throw away what I wasted my time on, I am posting it.

    Finishing SEASON 1:

This score probably deserves a second tier effort. I know, I don't make those comments like I used to on TV shows, but some times I just feel the need.

"Some guys don't become casualties until after the war is over."
"Yeah, and, ah, some guys never get home even though they've come back."
