Very distressed to see that James Southall may be taking a break from reviewing film scores and is considering shutting down his website, one of the best resources for online reviews that I know of. I respect his decision, but hope that he will come back in time.

But did Hans Zimmer ACTUALLY WRITE that response/put-down?
Maybe it was just another lackey, who oversees his social media sh!te?

I wasn't looking for another reason to dislike Hanz, they just sort of seem to appear--like a pimple.
EDIT: I've been lurking at moviewave since the late 90's. James Southall turned me on to many of what became my favorite scores. Hope this isn't permanent.

I really really hope and expect James to change his mind regarding this. One the one hand, I know and see and read how much passion and love he has for this art form niche that we all enjoy as well and how much he has enjoyed over the years giving reviews and updates and insight into this medium. And then to read a remark from from basically an industry A lister, for whom he has given high marks before and reviewed countless numbers of his works, basically be an ass...yeah, it can hurt and make you doubt yourself perhaps.
On the other hand...
In the lawless, massive world of the online social media swamp, he got a REACTION from an industry A lister!!! Meaning, you are being read and looked at and he has a voice that is being heard!! And obviously way more than he or anyone else perhaps thought. He rankled Zimmer's feather and he became snarky and snippy.
I could imagine just how much HATE mail must have come Siskel and Ebert's way back in the day. Hell, ALL of the influential and widely ready reviewers for that matter.
I hate it that Zimmer had to be way less than at least professional. Perhaps he had one too many cocktails and felt he had to be a big brother, who knows. Pretty much uncalled for nonetheless.
James should take this as a positive though and be proud he is obviously being read by more than just us film score fans. To get a reaction like that means he is actually doing something right and influential. Shake it off and keep up the good work.

It still breaks my heart and I do hope that Mr. Southall returns to reviewing, stronger than ever.
Rather sad that Zimmer can't see the forest for the trees: four hours of music is too damn much for any movie, whether or not said movie is (can you believe this guy?) four hours long. I could name scores I love that wouldn't hold up to four-hour presentations!
When one becomes an artist, one must accept that not everyone will appreciate or judge the art in the same manner.
Just a crazy situation.
Leaving personal thoughts on the quality of the music or the Zimmer-Southall debacle aside, one has to wonder if all four hours of music will actually be used in the Snyder cut or not. I mean, Howard Shore wrote as music for each of the LOTR films, but not all of it got used in either theatrical or extended cut, so I wonder if this will be the case here.

I never heard of this site. Is he leaving his old reviews intact, or taking down the whole thing?
He's been reviewing scores fairly consistently since the mid-90's. It's all subjective of course but I always liked James' sense of humor and found his tastes to be similar to mine. It seems like he's going to stop writing for the time being--his site will continue being hosted for a few months but after that--well, hopefully he has all of his reviews archived somewhere.
