Received today the new Kilar CD release Cala naprzód!/ Giuseppe w Warszawie (GAD CD 155) from GAD Records of Poland.

It contains the scores (no idea if they are complete) for two films directed by Stanislaw Lenartowicz in 1964 and 1966. The disc is about 40 minutes and has 28 tracks, 14 from each film.

The scores are from Kilar's early career (they are now the earliest scores of his in my collection); he started writing film music in the late 50s. He was in his early thirties when he wrote these two.

Cala naprzód! is an eclectic score. The film apparently deals with a sailor's tales of his exploits in different parts of the world, and this is reflected in the music. There are ethnic, for example North African, influences, and even a cha-cha piece.

Giuseppe w Warszawie is more unified, it has a mandolin-driven Italian flavour (the English title of the film is An Italian in Warsaw).

There are a couple of sonic imperfections in the tracks (as noted in the liner notes which are both in Polish and English), but the mono sound is overall fine to my ears.

The CD is inexpensive (11.15 euros shipped by registered mail from Poland to Finland) and an easy recommendation to all Kilar fans.

Yeah I ordered mine from eBay or somewhere. Can’t wait. He probably did dozens of Polish films none of us have ever heard of. Hopefully this is the first of many.

Im hope one day "Konig der Letzten Tage" will be re-released.

For me it is awesome score, even better than "Dracula" which is also great music.

Wilcze Echa came today ( along with Sami Swoi, playing later). It wasn't long before I had a smile on my face. It's Polish cowboy music. In fact I'd have put money on it being by Wojciech Lavagnino, or Gianni Kilar. smile

Cool. I love this surge of Kilar premieres, a decade after his death, and will be sure to check out as many as I can when opportunity allows. Is that Kilar on the cover of SALTO? I just realized I had never seen a young Kilar, so had to google and found this:

Is that Kilar on the cover of SALTO?

It's the legendary Polish actor Zbigniew Cybulski, "Poland's James Dean."

No, that´s Zbigniew Cybulski who was a very popular actor in Poland during the 60s in films by Andrzej Wajda, Jerzy Kawalerowicz and Wojciech Has and who died much too early in 1967 due to a tragic accident - he was only 39 at that time.
Have a look here:

Thanks to the both of you. I see now that except for the general 60s look, with the horn-rimmed glasses and all that, they don't look that similar.
