Very Sad. R.I.P. The very first thing that comes to my mind whenever I hear his name is the role he did in the TV-Series Just Shoot Me. That was somewhat funny series.

Noooooo not Quiller!
Another star in my youth gone, another nail in my own coffin. frown

87. Always liked his work, Remargen, King Rat, Russian Roulette, etc. Was only watching Lost Command last week and just recorded to watch Duchess and dirtwater fox. He could do good comedy too, that "El schmucko" scene with goldie hawn is great.

Surprised that Quiller doesn't get mentioned in the reports. I thought that was one of his most famous films.

Yup, I watched all of season three of Just Shoot Me just a few weeks ago (I didn't know I had the set, I found it when I was looking for something else), & George Segal was brilliant (there's not that many actors that are great at both comedy & drama). As with Bill, another bit of my past disappears.

Certainly a staple growing up. Seen him countless times in film and television. Though funny enough couldn't tell you what. RIP.

He could play really unlikeable characters like few others but he could also play sympathetic guys like no other. Mostly his good guys were tired, so tired.
Favourite George Segal film bar NONE: Rollercoaster. It holds a special place with me.

Very pleasing actor. My favourite films of his were "No Way to Treat a Lady" and "The Owl and the Pussycat" but his casting as an Arab in "Lost Command" was really weird! "A Touch of Class" was hugely popular in the UK. For some reason his film career seemed to go downhill after the 1970s (I wasn't aware of his extensive TV work after then).

I liked many of his movies, especially Rollercoaster, The Quiller Memorandum, King Rat, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and No Way To Treat A Lady. He could drama and comedies.

Sad to hear this news. I remember visiting Hollywood in the early 80's with friends and going to a taping of THE MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW. Segal was a guest and promoting his current movie CARBON COPY and he spoke highly of his young Co-Star and newcomer Denzel Washington. I was lucky to work on JUST SHOOT ME a few times as an extra when I was living in L.A. George had a great voice and delivery. Rest in Peace Sir!

And now in his memory, please enjoy Bill Conti's Main Title music to CARBON COPY starring George Segal and Denzel Washington:

Good theme zoob, i remember that. Very 80s but distinctly comedy theme. Segal was good in Carbon copy but Id forgotten it was denzil in that. That was only his 4th project and i think first major starring role.

Only 12 posts before Bob's tribute?
For a star like Segal?
We really are a dwindling number frown

I've had a very busy few days and acknowledge that at other times I would have posted something before now. I can't say he was a favourite actor but I liked him in many films and he was always watchable.

An obvious choice for my favourite film of his is The Quiller Memorandum (1966) which, for me, gets better with every viewing. His laconic, laid back portrayal of the world-weary agent is superb. I know he's not the Quiller of the novels (a series I greatly enjoy) but in the separate universe which is the cinematic treatment of the same (well, similar) material this works ... for me.

I would love to see A Touch of Class (1973) again ... not broadcast, to my knowledge, in the UK since the opening night of Channel 5 ... a film I enjoyed greatly upon release and in which his comedic talents were a match for Glenda Jackson's Oscar worthy portrayal.

I recall reading many years ago that his cinematic career hit the doldrums, probably mid-70s, because he, or his agent, pushed for top-Hollywood-star status but his films rarely garnered the revenues of his star contemporaries.

I agree; one of my favorites too.

I loved Segal in almost anything but remember THE DUCHESS AND THE DIRTWATER FOX being pretty "meh." He'll always be in my mind for two 1970 comedies, THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT and WHERE'S POPPA? Very few actors could pull off his genius at comic exasperation.

Luckily, he managed to live down his horrendous miscasting in 1966's THE LOST COMMAND as an Algerian rebel!

James Marsden did a fun impersonation of him in HEIGHTS (2005).

I'm bummed about this. I loved him in CARBON COPY, JUST SHOOT ME and THE GOLDBERGS.

Mr Bloodworth (whispering outside banker's wife house): "Alright, Romeo, shes up there. She's fat, she ugly and shes bowlegged..."

Malloy (George segal): "You dont have to whisper ...because she's deaf too!!"
