That's something that occurred to me from the first time I saw it, the Bain whisper. I never saw the first episode on broadcast as I was in hospital having my tonsils out at the time. But, she spoke with the whisper, and was usually lensed in soft focus for close ups. It always made me feel cold, like she was some sort of ice queen. Frosty. By the way, favourite episode? For me it's a tie with Breakaway (that I only saw later on rerun of course) and Dragon's Domain. I love the whole storytelling thing, the classical music, and the only monster in Season 1. Used to hate The Black Sun, but last time I saw it on Network's lovely Blu ray I quite enjoyed it. Along with the other episodes the nostalgia bug kicked in. Who knows? Maybe I'll pick up Season 2 in one of Network's sales...

Well I could be wrong without checking, but didn't her close ups have that soft focus look many Hollywood leading ladies had in classic 40s/50s movies? So it would seem to me to be one of those cosmetic things Bain herself might have requested. As I say, made her sound and look freezing.

Here are also some recollections from Catherine Schell, about her time on the series. https://catacombs.space1999.net/press/wrefpcs1993.html Thanks for info Mr. Johnson. Catherine Schell was a spectacular beauty, somewhat downplayed for the part. I also recall that the producers had another (absolutely) breathtaking actress in mind for the Maya role. There was one picture of her in an issue of Starlog, but I don't think I've ever seen her name anywhere. Does anyone have any info about her?

Teresa Graves is the only name I've read about; purportedly, 40 screen tests were done by the time C. Schell got the role.

Gerry Anderson described her as having very fine features. I would also add that she was stunning. Thanks for the info, Mr. Zardoz.

Strange that magazine interview. Because TV Zone was run by Doctor Who fans (and featured it prominently), so I wonder why they didn't ask her about her guest role, alongside Julian Glover, in a well loved Who serial with Tom Baker, City of Death.. Anyway Guardians of Piri does show Schell at her very attractive self so all is not lost on the show. And the better season to boot! I always did think she was made to look frumpy as Maya. Now we know why. At least it's a compliment (backhanded perhaps), that she thought she was so good looking, and then getting her part in Season 2 based on her capabilities as a actor.

Catherine Schell was a spectacular beauty, somewhat downplayed for the part. I read that that was down to Barbara Bain, who didn't want to be outshone by Schell in a costume similar to the one she wore in the first series. Now that I can understand, because she looks a scorcher in that. But to make SO much more frumpy?
