Also her Music to Storyteller t.v series,a combination of her woodwind writing and central/east European folk music.

Seconded on The Storyteller. Great, uncommon scoring for an uncommon series. I think it fits your stated preferences.

I would second the above-suggested GREY GARDENS, though I think you would appreciate it best if you made a point of seeing the film -- not the 1975 documentary but the Portman-scored 2009 film starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. The original documentary is fascinating as well, but that's another thread... If you saw the original doc though you would additionally discover what an amazing job Lange and Barrymore do in portraying this real-life (and quite strange) mother and daughter.

The Joy Luck Club (1993) ... ticks all the right boxes Seconded! You should also add WAR OF THE BUTTONS. I'd say if someone has those two above plus "Used People", "Benny & Joon", "Sirens", "Chocolat", "Cider House", "Emma" and "Nicholas Nickleby" (recommended by Thor), he pretty much knows all he needs to know about Rachel Portman. Nine titles - it leaves one place open, if someone wants to make it a Top-10!... The tenth title should be Never Let Me Go -- her greatest score and quite different in depth and mood from most of her others, so I'm surprised you omitted it... Yavar

Only You and War of the Buttons are the key items in my own Portman collection. Such gorgeous themes.
