A word of caution about Moby Dick: the sound is atrocious. Can't really be fixed. Chandos did a splendid modern recording with incredible soloists in SACD multichannel:
BornOfAJackal:If The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann is your album, you seriously need to spring for the hi-res transfer.
jkruppa:Downloaded last night and listened this morning on my drive to work. Even in the car the clarity and detail are incredible. Going to listen again shortly on my good speakers at home, but this sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Looking forward to the Hitchcock album and Obsession.
I'm pleased to see this thread has turned into a hi-res Herrmann frenzy.

I love love love Herrmann, but I have to say so few of his recordings actually sound good. He worked in the film industry with good people. How it is possibly he didn’t link up with better people?
The original Unicorn CD releases were horribly mastered. It would appear that this new label has done zero about it.
Horribly mastered, especially the Moby Dick Cantata... And I must add that almost all of my Unicorn records have suffered from "bronzing"... I'm not sure when I last looked at them, but I'll check to see if their condition has deteriorated further ...
Ref: Dutton-Vocalion, you probably recall they did Great Movie Thrillers doubled with a classic Ernest Gold film themes album.
Cheers
Yes, they also did the Rozsa Phase 4 Recordings. All these should be redone for SACD format since the Gerhardt recordings are just remarkeable.
The Gerhardt recordings could be done because RCA had the QUAD masters. Herrmann's Phase 4 stuff was never done that way, therefore there's no way for them to do them as SACDS unless it's two track - unless they could get the original multi-track tapes, which is doubtful.[/endquotel]
I think you’re mistaken about phase 4 it has nothing to do with surround or multi channel all recordings were stereo. It something to do with the way it was mixed but all the final recordings were stereo I remember the fabulous sound of the vinyl albums, the cds that came later never equaled it why would they just put this out at the CD yet again? What’s the point of remastering it?
