Haven't listened to the podcast yet but that's definitely an interesting story!

Wow, that's pretty surprising right there. But obviously, if your daughter is a musician and wants to make the music to your movie, that gets priority.

Although the "18 years old" thing seems like a joke. Zimmer was 30 in 1987.

I don't even remember music from the movie, other than some source music by Nancy Sinatra.

Zimmer sure likes dishing.

Great interview. Heard about the full Metal Jacket story before, but the most fascinating story is the making of The Last Emperor (starts at 22:45).

Sadly the only music connected to the movie I remember is the "song" culled from R. Lee Ermey's performance!

The first half of the film is pretty much scoreless if I remember correctly. There's some score for the final battle I believe but it are indeed the songs, like the Sinatra one and Surfin Bird, that stand out.

There's a long cue accompanying Leonard's breakdown and the final confrontation with the drill sergeant that ends the first half.

Wow, had no idea. But Z never got fired since! Which is pretty amazing.

Can somebody note the start time where he talks about it?

Kubrick gave jobs to anyone and everyone in his family and in his in-laws.
He was intensely nepotistic.

Today I also learned that Abigail Mead is a pseudonym for Vivian Kubrick.

It might be a misnomer to include "Rejected Score" in the thread title. Getting fired isn't necessarily the same thing as having a score rejected. The way Zimmer told the story, it sounded like he got fired because he wouldn't go along with Kubrick's instructions going into the score, not because Kubrick threw out what Zimmer provided. Does anyone know if he actually recorded a score for this?

Also the best story in that interview isn't even the JACKET story, but Terence Malick and Werner Herzog arguing over which was their favorite cue from THE LION KING.

The original score is very effective. Amazed that people on a film score fan-site claim they don't remember it. Is it just because it doesn't come from a name composer?

No, because it's shitty score.
Bring back Hans Zimmer!

It is a long list of people that Kubrick fired, tossed aside and abused.
It certainly does not reflect badly in any way on Zimmer. It is pretty much a badge of honor to be tossed out by Kubrick.

Absolutely. I've always considered this message board more a bastion for score collectors than anything else.

Not to disparage Zimmer, whose music I really like. But, I find it very hard to believe Kubrick ever seriously considered hiring anyone outside of his circle for the music.

Given what we know about Kubrick and music scores, it's more likely Kubrick was humoring a producer or studio exec about hiring Zimmer (or any other actual film composer, for that matter).
