If so, it is not in keeping with their historic use of original poster/album art.

Well, I already posted the original poster with the exact image they used as the basis for their cover, above. Kritzerland has released tons of Fox scores and many times has used the original art. Why would Fox mandate something different for this obscure John Wayne non-western?

This is actually the cover on most DVD and Blu-ray versions of the film I've found online:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/174755282266?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=174755282266&targetid=1068323855670&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9030503&poi=&campaignid=12595338459&mkgroupid=119999084379&rlsatarget=pla-1068323855670&abcId=9300522&merchantid=6320124&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImvCImNe_8AIVxmxvBB2flAsqEAQYDSABEgJdF_D_BwE

I'm guessing that would be more to your taste?

"Image not available."

But if you can't see the differences between the CD cover art and the image you posted previously, I don't know how to have this conversation.

If you're referring to this art (embedded now), I'm wondering how you would have better used it than Kritzerland did:

Remember it's got to be modified to work in CD cover dimensions.

I myself posted some better art above, used on the French Blu-ray edition of the film.

I originally wrote, "I know the phenomenon you’re talking about, but I’m pretty sure you’re wrong about it applying in this case, and that Kritzerland came up with the best cover design they could based on the available poster art."

Emphasis mine -- I said I was "pretty sure", not "100% sure", and Bruce Kimmel is free to chime in and correct me, if he had some of that better art available to use, and opted not to use it for some reason. Maybe that exact cover was dictated by the studio. It could be, though often Fox seemed to be pretty flexible in what they allowed labels to use.

There are a couple vibrant lobby posters for BatG, including the one Basil linked to, but good luck cropping them to 1x1 and arriving at satisfactory result. Accommodating the width of a lobby poster you'd have to settle for a lot of distracting negative space.

Spinmeister I love your custom cover work so if felt like trying your hand at a Barbarian and the Geisha cover I'd love to see what you come up with! I understand multiple reasons why some of the old poster art might not be suitable. What do you think of the newer French Blu-ray art, in terms of suitability?

Just looked it up.

It's clearly the most adaptable of the lot.

Can't seem to locate a high-resolution version, though

I'm not even sure now, looking at it head-on -- is that even an original painting, or just a modern photo collage artfully made to look like a painting?

I get why it's the most adaptable, and a cover from it would make me happy, but it might not even satisfy what Onya or Basil want (original poster art).

It's new artwork. There is no vintage key art rendered in this layout or obviously retro style.

I just realized that I have a copy of "My Geisha" in my massive "To Be Cleaned" stack. I guess I won't buy the CD until I've done some needledrops on the LP.

It's a while ago now, but no, the studio dictated nothing to us - Nick and I both hated the one sheet art and it certainly didn't crop well. We both liked the image we ended up with very much. We always use original art when it works and makes a good cover. But sometimes you have to go a different way rather than have ugliness. smile

OnyaBiri, if you drop me an e-mail let's see what we can do for you if you want all three. I happen to love the Barbarian score - it's pure and wonderful Friedhofer, with some great themes. The Geisha Boy was one we probably shouldn't have done because no one cared, but I love the score so we did it knowing it would not do well. And My Geisha is beautiful Waxman and it was a treat to do.

For my part, I am glad that the score to The Geisha Boy was released. It is indeed a wonderful score and I love it too. I play it very often.

It is so sad that probably not any more music from Jerry Lewis (and Dean Martin) movies will be released. So many great stuff - 3 Ring Circus, You´re Never Too Young, Pardners, Artists and Models to name but a few...
