As some people may know, Nick Castle (director of BOY WHO COULD FLY) would, more often than not, work with Craig Safan on his films.
However, for this mid 80s family/adventure/fantasy film, the producers decided they wanted Bruce Broughton (on a hot streak at the time) to score the film.
And he delivered a beautiful score, one of my all-time personal favourites by BB and in general.
I loved the Varese LP (a gorgeous highlights re-recording by the Sinfonia London under BB) and the subsequent releases of it that followed (yes, I have them all).
Anyway, I just received the Perseverance/Craig Safan score promo Lesser Known Favourites and his original, fully orchestral demo for it is included, as it was later used for a documentary film Safan's wife would go on to make about their son, who has Downs Syndrome.
It's called The Bittersweet Waltz and it's fascinating to hear it now.
To hear basically the same type of music (both are lilting and sweet with a tinge of sadness) by two film composers I really dig, for the same film, is very cool.
Broughton's tune is typically Broughton and is full of his 'isms' and Safan's is also threaded through with his own voicings.
It's impossible to say which is the best and the BB version is so ingrained in my mind to the film, that I wouldn't want to live in a world without it.
But it's obvious that Craig Safan would have also delivered a lovely, heartfelt score that I would have loved in that alternate universe.
Sorry I can't link the tune (I couldn't find anything on YouTube other than the Leon Redbone song with the same title), but anyone who's heard the Safan version on the promo, what do you think?

I had no idea about this, Kev -- thanks for highlighting it! Now I'm even more curious to hear that Perseverance disc so I appreciate the reminder about it.

If I can be sent a lossless copy of the demo, I'll upload it.
