Which do you like more, Williams STAR WARS main theme or Goldsmith's ST: TMP main theme? I like Goldsmith's ST: TMP main theme more. What about you guys?
That's a tough question. I tend to think of the SW theme as a march, whereas I think of the ST theme as a fanfare. That's a very minute distinction, I admit.

Hi Octoberman! That's funny, I almost put march for both.

See, that's where the water gets a little cloudy; there is a bit of a fanfare feel to SW, while there's a bit of a march quality to ST. But what the hell, maybe it's all just in my head.
Why do we even attempt to make this Sophie's Choice????
I enjoy both of them very much, and although I'm more of a "Star Trek" person than a "Star Wars" person, I'm going to give the edge to Star Wars.
This is not going to be very articulate, but I think of the Goldsmith theme as an excellent example of similar-type themes that came out after Star Wars demonstrated how it was supposed to work.
Although Star Wars is derivative of film music of the past, it became the instant model for so many other film scores. The main theme, in my opinion, is unimpeachable in its greatness. While the Star Trek main theme is a great theme, the Star Wars main theme is the reference example for a great theme.

Both are great. But yeah, ST:TMP was certainly influenced by the then vogue Star Wars bombastic styling. I imagine we would've gotten a much different main theme for Star Trek if it was scored before Star Wars. Still kinda perplexed they didn't go with a variation of the TOS main theme.
I don't like either. Marches and fanfares are the musical equivalent of someone yelling monotonously. I also can't stand Ride of the Valkyries. For me there always needs to be some subtlety or shade.
In terms of the films, I've never really cared about STAR TREK. I'm a STAR WARS guy through and through.
In terms of the themes, however, I can't say that either is a particular favourite. There is a lot of great music in both films, but I was never sold on the opening themes. I guess I would choose STAR TREK as the theme, and STAR WARS for score if it came down to it.
Star Wars, having been my introduction to sci-fi (and their scores), will always have my heart. Always.
With that said, Goldsmith's TMP theme is just so damn catchy, sometimes to the point of annoyance. But it is, no doubt, a thing of beauty. Gotta thank Robert Wise for that as well, as I'm sure everyone here knows.
I prefer the Star Wars scores. As far as the films and the TV series I adore Star Trek. Although my favourite science fiction world is that of Dune. All the books by both Frank Herbert and his son Brian.
