I've seen many posts about Brainstorm and it appears to be a very popular and sought after score for an expansion. I bought the Varese CD two decades ago and it remains a favourite of mine from Horner. I've always wondered how much music remains to be released and only discovered a few months ago that all of it does! I had never known the original album was a re-recording.
Anyway, I haven't been able to find a list of cues from the film so I decided to make one myself. This is in no way as comprehensive as other 'Complete Score Breakdowns' I have seen on here and forgive me if someone has already done it but here goes.
Track titles are made up where needed and times are approximate.

Brainstorm Film Score:

Main Title (2:15)
Gordy's Tape (0:42)
Recording Karen (1:55)
Michael's Gift to Karen (6:37)
Hal's Tape (1:03)
Lillian's Heart Attack (3:40)
First Playback (3:25)
Sting (0:04)
Project Brainstorm (4:34)
Psychotic Episode (0:21)
Chris Plays Tape (0:49)
Gaining Access to the Tapes (2:40)
Tell Me a Story (1:07)
Phoneline Cut / Foam Party / Escape / Conveyor Chaos (4:01)
Hell (0:10)
Leaving Earth (0:40)
Leaving the Galaxy (0:06)
Final Playback & End Title (6:48)

Total Film Score Time: (41:57)

Source Music:

Piano Recital 1 (0:50)
Piano Recital 2 ( 0:25)
Demonstration (0:26)
Function Jazz (1:58)
Funeral Choir (1:20)
Restaurant Source (1:14)

Thanks, friend.

But where can one find "Tell Me a Story" in the movie?

Thanks, friend.

But where can one find "Tell Me a Story" in the movie?

I believe it is the cue for the phone call between Walken and Wood after their blow-up at the restaurant.

That's correct. I felt like that was the standout line of dialogue in the script at that point so just called it that. It could easily be called 'Karen Calls Mike' to be more descriptive. I'm a bit inconsistent with my track titles!

I just rewatched this film last night since seeing it for the first time in the 80s and I wish I liked it more. Some of the problems may have been fixable with reshoots if Wood's death hadn't thrown everything into chaos, but I had a sense the whole time that the story needed more work. The third act gets silly.

Having said that, the score is fantastic. Listening to it last week is what inspired me to rewatch the movie. Star Trek II and this back to back -- Horner was on a roll.

BRAINSTORM may be my favorite Horner score, and his London Symphony Orchestra re-recording among my all time favorite soundtrack recordings.

I remember when the film was first released. Star Trek II had caused everyone to sit up and take notice of this "new guy" a year earlier, but in 1983, when he delivered Something Wicked This Way Comes, Krull and Brainstorm within months of each other, it was pretty clear James Horner was a major new talent.

Plus he rounded-out that year with Uncommon Valor, Testament, The Dresser and Gorky Park, which pretty-much solidified his newly-won reputation.

Oh, slightly off-topic, but I was saddened to learn that that architectural wonder, the Burroughs Wellcome building (where much of Brainstorm was shot) was razed just a couple of months ago...

What about all the alternate and rejected cues?

1. I'm not a Prokofiev, YOU'RE A PROKOFIEV
2. Weepy Donuts
3. The Knife
4. Karen's Gift to Michael... It's a Coffee Table Book
5. Do the Brainstorm (disco source)
6. "Do the Yeezstorm" - Kanye West feat everyone but Kanye

Although most of the material not on the LSO album are very short, there is some really nice, atmospheric pieces in there. Everytime I watch the film (and yeah, the film has problems) I hear stuff I'd love on a cd. Historically it's a very important Horner work, too so my frustrations with Varese are unabated.

Been listening to this again today. What a powerhouse this score is. Potentially/possibly/arguably/ideally in need of an update though - as good as the Varese sonics are. Not desperately though.

Yeah, I'd buy that. It was the first Horner score where I said 'wow'!

Been listening to this again today. What a powerhouse this score is. Desperately in need of an update though - as good as the Varese sonics are.

Why is this "desperately" in need of an update? The recording and sound quality is very good. It's not the original filmtracks, granted, so if you want those, they still have to be released.
However, the London Symphony Orchestra recording Horner made is -- if push comes to shove -- the one I would prefer anyway to listen to. So it's a terrific recording in top sound. I am not saying this release cannot possibly be improved (more in depth booklet, perhaps a release like Damien - Omen II with the film recording and the re-recording, etc.), but lots of things can be improved. I don't see this "desperately" in need of an update though. And I'm saying this as someone who is a big fan of the score, I consider it among Horner's finest, if not even his finest.

Because BRAINSTORM is one of the very best of Horner, and it is a great film too. So there you go.

Because it's not the film recording, there's music missing, the disc is 40 years old, it's arguably a milestone Horner career score... yeah, I'm with you that the album we have is a wonderful thing, but it is 7 cues of a re-recording!

And as such it has already a terrific presentation of its music, with the London Symphony Orchestra, perhaps the best album Horner ever recorded. So now what?

The film recording isn't nearly as good as the London Symphony Orchestra recording Horner specifically made for listening purposes. I get it when die hard fans and completionists crave every last bit that was ever recorded, but that's still a far, far cry from "desperately" needing a new release, which obviously implies the current release is wholefully inadequate, which it is not.
