I came to this music via the film first, so the complete opposite of Senor Graham. Hearing the juxtaposition of the lovely, dreamy music under Susannah York reading the stories, against the startling sounds of the house/dementia, was film music brilliance at its best. The film, as I remember it, is a bit of a mind fuck, wherein you're never sure what is real and what is happening inside York's tortured/crumbling mind. Such was Altman in the 70s. And what freedom the film afforded Williams. I'm still awaiting my copy of this, together with ALWAYS and some other goodies from Intrada. Patience is a virtue, or so they say

I saw this film in the theater when it was released and loved the film and the score. Bought the promo LP at Rose Records in Chicago. There is a book devoted solely to the music in Kubrick's films. Someone should write a book about the use of music in Altman's films. His use of Williams is well known on this board (The Long Goodbye is a favorite Williams score for me) plus Altman got exceptionally eerie scores from Tom Pierson (Quintet) and Gerald Busby (Three Women). Then there was a score by Rosenman (Countdown), the famous song from MASH (Mandel), the poignant use of Leonard Cohen songs in McCabe and Mrs Miller, Annie Ross songs in Shortcuts, and the incredibly ambitious use of original songs in Nashville. I am leaving out a lot, as Altman had a lengthy if spotty career, but the above is just off the top of my head.

Message(s) for Thor - 1) Did you end up getting this new release? 2) Did you cover the film in one of your movie threads from years ago? If you did, and can resurrect it, that would be great. I might not be able to offer much in the way of brainy insight, but it's a film well worth discussing. Trying to answer you briefly via iPhone. No, I did not get it. I’m content with my old Prometheus release. I have covered the film and score well in lectures and articles over the years, but mostly in Norwegian, which would be useless to you. Probably also in some old threads, but it’s a hassle to search, copy and paste on my phone. Feel free to offer brainy insights, though. I’m still lurking around these parts.

For UK viewers, this film is getting a rare showing on the free view channel Talking Pictures tonight (Saturday 14th) at 11-30pm. Interesting film... fascinating score. Just set my recorder for this film. I'm not familiar with film or score so am looking forward to watching, Thanks for posting details of the Talking Pictures screening, Kev.
