Just listen to "City Hall" which itself was influenced by "On The Waterfront".

Track 14, "The Prelude" from ICE COLD IN ALEX, (1958) by Leighton Lucas, on THE FILM MUSIC OF ARTHUR BENJAMIN & LEIGHTON LUCAS (Chandos CHAN 10713), sounds eerily similar to the Millenium Falcon being tractor-beamed into the Death Star. This is about a boxy, some might say Sandcrawler shaped Ambulance, crawling across the North African desert in WWII.
Philip Lane who reconstructed the score and wrote the liner notes said he "beefed up" the thin orchestration so perhaps it didn't sound quite so London-Symphony-Orchestra-Grande in the movie. Which I haven't seen.
I would be curious to hear what others think. And no, I don't think John Williams stole it. But when I listen to it, I think, "That sounds like STAR WARS."

"Stolen"is a bit harsh. "Reminiscent of" sounds less accusatory.

There's a previous post on this ….and I just found what I said about the above:

“Somewhere I read an item about the music for New Hope and Ice Cold in Alex. Gilbert Taylor was the cinematographer on both films, and it's been suggested that Lucas hired Taylor after seeing his work, in particular Ice Cold, and used some of that film's music to temp track New Hope. Thus indicating to Williams the approach Lucas was looking for. The template is certainly there.”

  • Even the great Jerry Goldsmith, much praised for his originality, did it.
He clearly stole the theme he used on the Russia House from the rejected score of Alien Nation ??.

  • Reusing themes from rejected scores is different, to me.

That's more wise recycling. Until recently, nobody ever dreamed that rejected scores would be heard by the public, so why not reuse a nice composition? smile

I wish he reused his theme from Judge Dredd.

Elfman’s Batman theme is “heavily influenced” (ie plagiarised) from Herman’s Journey To The Centre Of The Earth. Note for note,

Didn’t Horner(who I love) take a theme from Searching for Bobby Fisher, expand it and use it for the main theme in A Beautiful Mind?
