"No love" might be a bit of a stretch! I've seen plenty of love for him on the forums over the years. As to whether he's underrated, you could make that case. He has a distinctive voice that not everyone connects with. And while he certainly scored his share of acclaimed films, it seems like only a relative handful are still well-remembered among casual cinephiles (REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, EAST OF EDEN, the adapted music for BARRY LYNDON, etc.) and dedicated fans of sci-fi and fantasy (FANTASTIC VOYAGE, LORD OF THE RINGS, STAR TREK IV, etc.). Also, with a few exceptions, it seems like most of his best-known scores came during the first half of his career. So the number of younger fans conversant with his work is probably going to continue shrinking, sadly. All the more reason to keep the flame alive here!

I actually enjoy his Lord of the Rings score. True, it's not on the same level as Shore's meisterwerks, but it's very good on it's own level. That said, I'm also not a fan of Prophecy, which I only got as a freebie with Rózsa’s Moonfleet years ago. Haven't heard enough of his other work to make an educated opinion of his full skill as a composer and it's been ages since I've seen the James Dean films he scored.

Speaking for myself, three reasons: 1. He too often got into a groove and repeated himself between projects, almost in a James Horner-like fashion but without Horner's versatility and variety of sounds, or his emotional resonance. 2. Even these sounds that he repeated largely didn't connect with me. I can recognize his tone pyramid thing a mile away; it's as constant as Horner's "danger motif", but I never really liked it much. 3. He was without a doubt the most arrogant (and dismissive towards his peers) film composer who ever lived, which is saying something. He always acted like he was God's gift to music and film. He trashed Basil Poledouris when he scored Robocop 2, and could only manage the most mild praise for Jerry Goldsmith's groundbreaking Planet of the Apes score. He acted like his Star Trek score was obviously the best of that franchise (LOL!) -- That said, even though for many years I HATED Rosenman and his music, I have warmed up to him somewhat. I used to despise his Star Trek IV score outside of the final cue, but it's grown on me a bit (even though I think a Horner score would have been far superior) and after the Intrada edition I've been able to enjoy it for its charms. I've even warmed up to Robocop 2 a little. The Rosenman scores I most enjoy (by far) are Cross Creek (recognizable fingerprints but lovelier than any other score of his I've heard), Prophecy (just a FUN monster score with lots of blaster beam use), and Hellfighters (swaggery score for a John Wayne movie exhibiting some influence from Elmer Bernstein). I like his second Planet of the Apes score (Battle) but not his first (Beneath...it's practically unlistenable, to me). His final feature film score, Jurij, is also pretty good, and I do also like some of his mid 50s scores well enough. So he's been growing on me slowly but surely...but he'll never be a favorite, I don't think. Yavar

What, there's another composer besides Jerry Goldsmith? Just kidding!!! I don't think there's no love, just not as much love as there is for certain others. Cheers

"And When the Sky Was Opened" is a Twilight Zone score I absolutely adore.

He's a composer with a VERY distinctive style, so it helps if you love that style, or maybe are just in the mood for it. There are lots of composers who's music I really enjoy, but I need to be in the mood for their style, to play 'em. Rosenman is one of them. When I'm in the mood, I love listening to the scores I have by him (LOTR, POTA 2 & 5, CROSS CREEK, KEEPER OF THE CITY, ST4-VOYAGE HOME, plus scores on many compilation CDs like TWILIGHT ZONE, TV OMNIBUS, ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ).
