I realize that much of the music from the pilot "The Cage" made it into "The Menagerie."

I don't think there was any original music written for "The Menagerie."

Does anyone know if any other music from the earlier shows or library cues were tracked into "The Menagerie," and if so, do you know which?

Yes, there was music mined from other episodes. "The Man Trap," "Charlie X," "Where No Man Has Gone Before," "The Enemy Within," "Mudd's Women," "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" and "The Naked Time." Actually, I'd say pretty much every score recorded to that point.

Thanks.

So I guess it won't be easy to compile the complete score for the episode, will it? wink

This topic brings to mind a music error that is in all of the remastered versions.

One piece of music that was tracked in was "Dead Crater" from The Man Trap. This was used at the end of the scene where Pike first speaks to The Keeper. When the "restored" episode was made for DVD and then subsequently for Blu-ray, the cue was not removed from the audio mix.

I personally have done my own isolated tracks for these episodes for my own personal enjoyment, but I didn't make a list lol.

That is interesting! Do you know if there is a track from "The Cage" that was supposed to be used in that segment?

That moment was originally unscored. "We may soon begin the experiment" is greeted with silence and then right to the Enterprise briefing room.

And noooope, it's not easy to make scores to every episode. It's actually really a pain, I did it for The Corbomite Maneuver and stopped there. Just the idea of tackling a cut-and-paster like Balance of Terror sends me into fits. And it's MUCH easier to do today than it was in 1966 when they had to physically cut and paste tapes.

Like garments.

Too bad you did that one, as the music stems were included on the Roddenberry Vault blu-ray set (11 of 12 episodes had them). Unfortunately the volume levels were not corrected so they still needed tweaking.

I will have to do a custom edit of the "The Cage" that includes "Dead Crater" and "New Sexy Exotic," the latter of which truly belongs with the score.

I seem to recall that the Remastered version of the episode at least initially had a cue from "The Doomsday Machine" placed into it, which of course would have been impossible when the two-parter was originally tracked...

Music editing on a TV series of that vintage involved cutting and splicing magnetic film, which was sprocketed and with experience was easier to work with than recording tape.

But yeah, it's a much simpler job with digital tools - to say nothing about the physical toll cutting film would take on your neck and back.

It still does. The DVDs and the Stereo audio track on the Blu Rays have "The Doomsday Machine" music and the Fred Steiner rerecordings from "Charlie X" instead of the actual cues.

Thanks for the correction, that's good info. A hell of a job and honestly a pretty crummy listening experience on its own.

I recently finished doing season 1...took me nearly 6 years! I took a couple of year-long breaks here and there though and would knock out a couple a month in some instances. I sort of wish I had made an editing log when I started it years ago. I may at some point go back and make a editing log for every episode and share it if people were curious.

I will say it was kind of fun for me personally to do it.

While doing season 1 I also found at least one instance where a stinger was used that actually was never released in the box set or the 50th release; it is in Miri towards the end when Bones and Spock are debating about if they should wait or go ahead and just take the vaccine. It sounds like it was a stinger recorded for Charlie X and is just a loud piano chord being hit and sustains, but alas it is not on any official releases (I ended up ripping the audio from my DVDs and removed the dialogue and sound FX). I also found a couple of instances where they actually changed the pitch or tempo of a cue, which I never noticed until doing this project and was kind of neat since it made some cues sound totally different; I know the very end of What Are Little Girls Made Of? is one of those instances. Surprised they actually didn't do that more often in the series to give some cues more use without sounding completely redundant.

Nope. I have a copy of the Portuguese VHS of the B&W Workprint and there is no music there at all.
