This is a pretty impressive score for a first time effort.
Also, for a low-budget film with a limited budget, Simonsen really gets a lot from his 20 players and a handful of vocalists.
It's got a nice organic feel to it, despite some electronic support for the limited orchestra.
Also impressive, considering he composed this before he worked with Mychael Danna to gain some major film music knowledge! He learnt from a book (the liner notes say).
He also had the freedom to compose without any temp track distractions, although one can hear the odd refrain from something like Shore's LOTR trilogy and the more languid/ambient works from the likes of Horner, Burwell & Zimmer. Also, track 11 (Swift Vengeance) has a real John Barry feel to it.
He's also IN the film, as he was part of the cast and production team and a friend of the director.
He's come a long way since then, with the new big budget, high profile GHOSTBUSTERS film due for release soon.
No surprise to find this wonderful, under the radar score was released by Keep Moving Records sometime around 2014 (limited edition of 500 copies).
Anyone else know it?

I have had this ages. In fact I think my cover is now in black and whitebig grin it is indeed a good effort . As I said elsewhere I haven't had a shit cd. Whole you're on an unknowns role I will recommend( and have done before) Little Erin Merryweather. Another small orchestra (plus choir, the composers uni mates).

Oh! Fancy seeing you here, Day wink
I've had it awhile too.
It was a 'bonus' pick from an old order with KMR.
I have played it a few times before, but I liked it so much on this listen, that it compelled me to write up about it (I did look for another thread about it, but couldn't see one).
I'll keep an eye out for that one you just mentioned.
My 'bonus' pick on my current order (in transit) is THE PAGAN QUEEN. Is that any good? The samples sounded decent.

Yes, I think so. Large orchestra. A touch of Kilar's drac in the opening track. Some nice delicate stuff. Quite lush in places. A bit of East European flavour about it. Tr.6 has some nice battle music.
Also Room 36 gets the Damo seal of approval.

I really only got on the Simonsen bandwagon in about 2013, with his wonderful THE SPECTACULAR NOW. Then there was WISH I WAS HERE the next year, untill he reached his - IMO - magnum opus with NERVE in 2016. He's not always a hit, but quite often, and especially in non-orchestral settings (whether it's indie rock or electronica).

I've yet to discover his work prior to the Danna collabs, including this feature film debut. But I intend to! Thanks for the heads-up.
