THE CALL OF THE WILD
Music by JOHN POWELL
INT 7164

Intrada, in association with 5 Cat Studios, announces the CD release of 20th Century Studios' 2020 film The Call of the Wild. For this outdoor adventure, composer John Powell wrote a score for a 90-piece orchestra plus 60-voice choir. The score sometimes captures the folksy, wild country setting of the action (at times employing no less than 12 banjos), but also amps up the large-scale thrills and epic scope required by this vast tale of loyalty and conflict. The ever-pervasive struggle between man, animal and nature propels both story and score. Powell's deep passion for dogs made this film an easy choice for him to score, and his love is clearly felt throughout the music.

Based on Jack London's 1903 novel of the same name, the tale is set during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. The story focuses on Buck, a dog who is abducted one night and shipped to the Yukon aboard a freighter. After arriving, Buck returns a dropped harmonica to John Thornton (Harrison Ford) right before being sold to join a dog sled to deliver mail across the Yukon. After numerous adventures, Buck reunites with Thornton and they become companions. But the call of the wild in the form of a female white wolf begins to pull on Buck.

Hope this sells well enough for Intrada to consider pressing other 'digital only' releases onto CD.

Going to wait for the future maybe Super Duper Deluxe Digital Edition Powell produced similar to Solo.

To do a copy and paste job makes no sense.

Another fine release from Intrada and a great new score from John Powell.
Lush. Thematic. Emotional. Varied. And typical John Powell sounding.
So nice to have a physical edition with booklet, stills, notes etc.
Fun to read Powell being slightly embarrassed that John Williams popped by for a visit* on the day he was recording with 12 banjos!! smile
Very recommended.
Much Thanks Intrada.

*it's cool that they have become mates.

No guarantee that is going to happen and it's less likely than Solo. Yeah both films bombed but one has strong branding behind it to merit a deluxe edition. I don't know whats "missing" if anything.

This is a very good presentation of the score. I'm more than happy with this playlist. I actually whittled it down a bit. Worth getting a physical copy as is, IMHO.

What tracks did you drop in your whittle, Sol?
67 minutes is quite lengthy, but I'm struggling to chop any cues.
I like that the slower/warmer/tender tracks help the ebb/flow of the more frantic action/suspense ones.
And I don't have a problem with the more rustic tracks either.
Just curious which ones you lost.

In my opinion there is literally NO tracks that should be dropped from this.

I removed some cues and reordered the remaining into a listening experience I liked. I also did some micro edits on some cues though I don't remember the specifics of those edits.

Thanks Sol.
I'm with jedizim on this one.
I played it 3 times today and couldn't find a track to cut loose.
This is a rare modern day score that can sustain over 1 hour of music without losing my interest.

That's the beauty of the digital age, we can make our own custom playlists or play them as is.
Now you all got me curious of what I cut out and why?!

Natty Gann on steroids!

That's my first impression while listening to the Intrada CD. Like Gann, harmonica and banjo set the ethnic tone, but the orchestral bombast here is MUCH BIGGER. Some of the choral parts seem a bit out of place in this setting, more like something out of Temple of Doom, but I haven't seen the film, so they may be entirely appropriate. I do love the original novel, though, so I'll probably watch the movie eventually despite the CGI dog (ugh!) to hear the music in context.

Overall, a very enjoyable and colorful score by Powell, but that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone given his track record. Highly recommended!

The score is quite nice, the movie is actually mostly not too bad, rather pretty for much of it.
The end takes a pastoral movie and turns it somewhat violent and deadly, which really dunks the film unpleasantly.
It was quite a strange choice in the script for the last 15 minutes for a family movie.
