Not at the last site, but somewhere along the famous London street. I was in Liverpool last week and the new shop there looks bigger than the one they've moved from. It was set to open yesterday on the 100th anniversary of HMV. Another ten shops elsewhere in the UK are set to open sometime this year.

Hey Les, did you manage to make it into that other CD/DVD Exchange shop in St John's precinct before you left?
Great to see you last week (and to meet Big Jim Wilson too) and sip beers and swap stories at the Dock.
Good Times!

Hey, Kev. Yes I had time to call in the shop. I bought the new blu-ray of MURDER BY DECREE, one of my favourite Holmes films, with a very creepy score. Our afternoon at the Dock was great!

This is great news Les, finally a return to bricks & mortar. I only hope they re-open here in Dublin as well.

Starter for ten-
Which famous composer opened the first HMV one hundred years ago today?

Hopefully it will do well.

It was always a Mecca for me in my youth whenever I had a trip to London.

I could usually pick up a vinyl album I was after in their superb soundtrack section.

And of course just casually flick through ALL of the others.

I miss HMV's Oxford Street branch.. I remember buying Edward Scissorhands on cassette for £1.99 despite it a US import, I thought it was mispriced! Also I remember finding Intrada's first release of The Last Starfighter in their soundtrack section and being super-thrilled! I when got home I actually showed it off excitedly to my sisters.

I remember back in the early/mid-80's when I was in the RAF, stationed in Suffolk, I used to get the Train from Ipswich to London (Kings Cross) then London (Euston) to Birmingham (New Street) a much better trip that way rather than going across country.

On changing in London I would make a bee-line for HMV on Oxford Street (I remember there being a huge Virgin Records, on Tottenham Court Road, I think) But I remember vividly getting so excited to pick up BLUE THUNDER, PSYCHO II and THE THING on vinyl. And then spending far too long going through what else was available. At that time the HMV and Virgin Records in Birmingham could not hold a candle to those London stores.

Cheers

It's the other way around now. The HMV Vault in Birmingham has the area of twenty-five tennis courts.

Used to take the ferry from Calais to Dover, then the train to London to buy vinyl, later on CD's at Virgin and HMV, both located in Oxford Street. Good old times

Great! And it's only 20 minutes walk away from Fopp in Covent Garden. But I still miss the best record shop ever, the huge Tower Records Store in Piccadilly Circus.

When I was a teenager living in the American midwest I was lucky enough to visit London twice in 1969 and 1970. For you Londoners, you can correct my memory if I'm wrong on the geography, but we stayed both times at the King's Court Hotel on a road (can't remember the name) that ran into Bayswater along Hyde Park. Once I discovered HMV I made my way down the Bayswater Road till it turned into Oxford. I remember seeing artists displaying their work on the sidewalk. I bought a few things there, including the Ember album, John Barry Plays 007, which was not available in the states.

This is only an aspiration by the owner of HMV and he’s said before that he would like to open a store again in Oxford Street. There’s no imminent store opening.

It's to be hoped that when an Oxford Street HMV site is sorted, it's a bit bigger than the last one was, west of Oxford Circus. There are several provincial HMV shops larger than that was, and the HMV Vault at Birmingham is bigger than anything London ever had. Personally, I can't grumble, I have six branches less than an hour away from where I live.

I’m not sure Ipswich trains have ever come into Kings Cross - could it have been Liverpool Street?
