I remember back in the early/mid-80's when I was in the RAF, stationed in Suffolk, I used to get the Train from Ipswich to London (Kings Cross) then London (Euston) to Birmingham (New Street) a much better trip that way rather than going across country.
On changing in London I would make a bee-line for HMV on Oxford Street (I remember there being a huge Virgin Records, on Tottenham Court Road, I think) But I remember vividly getting so excited to pick up BLUE THUNDER, PSYCHO II and THE THING on vinyl. And then spending far too long going through what else was available. At that time the HMV and Virgin Records in Birmingham could not hold a candle to those London stores.

Used to take the ferry from Calais to Dover, then the train to London to buy vinyl, later on CD's at Virgin and HMV, both located in Oxford Street. Good old times

When I was a teenager living in the American midwest I was lucky enough to visit London twice in 1969 and 1970. For you Londoners, you can correct my memory if I'm wrong on the geography, but we stayed both times at the King's Court Hotel on a road (can't remember the name) that ran into Bayswater along Hyde Park. Once I discovered HMV I made my way down the Bayswater Road till it turned into Oxford. I remember seeing artists displaying their work on the sidewalk. I bought a few things there, including the Ember album, John Barry Plays 007, which was not available in the states.
