Grandpa Moff called out Vader for bickering in the conference room in front of his officers. Essentially humiliating him. Vader could've just "forced pushed" him off of a ledge afterwards and let him fall to his death and claim, "he just slipped". Tarkin even refused to evacuate the Deathstar when victory was in hand despite a minimal flaw found in the Deathstar schematics. This guy had no fear.

I think by that point in the backstory Palpatine's need for Vader's strongarm tactics had greatly diminished over the 20-odd years since the Jedi were slaughtered.
I seem to recall a sense that Palpatine had granted an enormous amount of authority to Tarkin--making him almost equal to Vader's power in a more administrative sort of way.

Palpatine probably thought Vader was an unstable git and just used him for his own ends. Tarkin was smarter and more reliable. His own hubris lead to his demise.

Peter Cushing liked the role so much he came back from the dead!

Excellent points all! I always wondered about the Tarkin/Vader relationship. Vader certainly had no fear of Tarkin physically speaking and like Solium stated, could have offed Tarkin.
I just assumed that either Vader recognized and respected Tarkin's value as a strategist, leader, being smarter, etc., or that Vader had an understanding from Palpatine that Tarkin was "hands off", so to speak, and that was why he tolerated Tarkin's "leash".
Or is it possible Tarkin had some force skills that were never seen?

There is a line in the old TESB novel that I always remember.
I can't recall if it was about Needa or Piett or whoever, but I like how it could have applied to Tarkin too.
I'm paraphrasing , so bear with me.
"A great man is never late or early, he arrives exactly when he means to".
It fits Tarkin's arrogance to a T.

The weird thing is that the line was used almost word for word for the scene in the "Fellowship" movie--when Gandalf first came into town for Bilbo's birthday party and met up with Frodo on the road in.
I still don't know if that line was originally from Tolkien and Donald Glut pilfered it, or if Jackson and his writers remembered the line in Glut's book and stuck it in "Fellowship".
I have a feeling it might be the latter, but I don't have proof.

I always looked at Tarkin as sort of a Don in the Empire Mafia. Vader was one of his Capos. He has Vader do his dirty work and uses him to weed out the weak links in the Empire chain.

Tarkin was a driven professional soldier (and villain!) in a *galaxy* of Imperials. He was an equal to Vader, but not for reasons of the Force.

Agree with OP... one of the best parts of SW.

One of the best things Lucas did was bring seasoned actors into the film. They brought gravitas and grounded the story. Grand Moff Tarkin isn't your typical cartoony villain. It probably turns into a spoof without the greats like Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing.

Wasn't it just a matter of rank? Vader being the emperor's right hand doesn't automatically mean that he outranks everyone. Being a right hand sometimes only means you are the one to clean the arse and the meet and greet is left to the left one.

D.S.

By the way "Badass" has to be subject of the thread "These phrases need to go away" despite being only a word.

When the original Star Wars was made, the "Emperor" wasn't really a Sith Lord who used the force, but came out of politics. The Empire was a bureaucratic regime, and Vader a relic from earlier times. Vader's position was more operative, and while he was high ranking, he wasn't necessarily the highest ranking on paper. In any case, it was obviously Tarkin and not Vader who was in command of the Death Star. Lucas changed the backstory a number of times with the following movies.

Yep. The prequels pretty much messed up everything in Star Wars

With Tarkin being the lead of the Death Star project, as well as the man with the grander plan for its design, Vader may not have seen Tarkin as an equal, yet conceded to his experience nonetheless. Vader's "as you wish" was more of a common courtesy than subservience, as his ultimate role was being the adjutant reporting to the Emperor of Tarkin's progress.

    No bickering = no loving!

Finally! A question I can answer! (Sort of). With all the changes good or bad - but especially after the Disney buyout - I can’t keep track of stuff anymore. But… and this is up until about 2005…

The explanation is that Tarkin is the one in charge of the Death Star and it’s mission. Vader was sent there more as a JAFO / an observer. As someone said before, Vader was the Emperor’s strong arm enforcer but Tarkin was so competent that he didn’t have to fear Vader’s reprisals, even when they were at odds (Vader putting the homing beacon on the Falcon seemed an “awful risk” to Tarkin.) Vader was also told to follow Tarkin’s orders, which he did begrudgingly.

Once Tarkin was gone, Vader was given carte blanch to do what needed to be done to destroy the Rebellion after Yavin.

OMG, this is brilliant! I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.
If Lucas made Star Wars today- over exposition and action scenes that never end.
