FRIDAY, JULY 23

THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH---photo and synopsis released for the Joel Coen movie starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, “An anguished film that stares, mouth agape, at a sorrowful world undone by blind greed and thoughtless ambition. In meticulously world-weary performances, a strikingly inward Denzel Washington is the man who would be king, and an effortlessly Machiavellian Frances McDormand is his Lady, a couple driven to political assassination – and deranged by guilt- after the cunning prognostications of a trio of ‘weird sisters’ (a virtuoso physical inhabitation by Kathryn Hunter).
Coen’s tale of sound and fury is entirely his own – and undoubtedly one for our moment, a frightening depiction of amoral political power-grabbing that, like its hero, ruthlessly barrels ahead into the inferno.”

NOPE---poster released for the Jordan Peele horror movie.

DUNE: THE SISTERHOOD---Diane Ademu-John (EMPIRE) is the writer/showrunner/executive producer of the HBO Max series that is a prequel to the Denis Villeneuve remake movies. The series will focus on the mysterious female order Bene Gesserit. Villeneuve will write the pilot episode.

FANTASTIC FOUR---Marvel fans want John Krasinski and his wife, Emily Blunt, to play Reed and Sue Richards in the reboot movie. Blunt commented," I really understand that [superhero movies] are like a religion for a lot of people. They don’t appeal to me in the same way. I don’t have this burning desire to play a superhero."
Blunt was supposed to play Black Widow in IRON MAN 2, but she left due to a schedule problem.

THE WALKING DEAD---producer/director Greg Nicotero commented on the status of the Rick Grimes movies, "I wish I knew, and I wish I could say [when it's happening]. I've read a variety of drafts of the scripts over the last few months. They're really making sure that they get it right. I don't know, because I'm always in my head going, 'Okay, so WALKING DEAD is wrapping up [in Season 11], but now they're talking about all these spin-offs and all these movies and all this and all that. And then CREEPSHOW.' Everyone's like, 'When does it feel like you're going to be done?'"

THE EXORCIST---director David Gordon Green (HALLOWEEN) said the Morgan Creek movie will be a sequel to the original William Friedkin movie, “The Exorcist has been written. That was one of my pandemic projects. It’s not inaccurate [that it will be a sequel to the original film]. I like all the Exorcist movies. And not only do I like them, I think they can all fall into the acceptable mythology for what I’m doing. It’s not like I’m saying, ‘Pretend that The Exorcist 2 never happened.’ That’s fine to exist. They’re all fine to exist, and I enjoy all of them.”

THREE WOMEN---Shailene Woodley will star in this Showtime miniseries based on the best-selling book.

ECHOES---Michelle Monaghan will star in this Netflix seven-part miniseries about identical female twins who share their homes and husbands---until one twin goes missing.

THE LAST OF US---Anna Torv will have recurring the role of Tess, Joel's kidnapping partner.

BATTLE OF THE PLANETS---Daniel Casey (F9: THE FAST SAGA) will write the movie based on the Japanese anime. The movie will be the beginning of a multi-media franchise.

TRIVIA---in the STAR TREK pilot "The Cage", Peter Duryea played Lieutenant Tyler. Duryea is the son of actor Dan Duryea.

Peter Duryea is the son of actor Dan Duryea.

Dan Duryea co-starred in THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX.

I like Green's attitude re the previous Exorcist movies; I enjoy all of them too, despite their flaws. Looking forward to his take on the series.

"The best scare in cinema, Oct."

That goes to the original Carrie. At the end, the theater floor moved.

I would not want to have to pick from either of those two.
The Carrie shot is just stunning even after all these years have passed.

But there is something about "Exorcist III".
The way that whole scene was built up so slowly just fills it with dread.
That whole movie is just genius movie-making from start to finish.

It's from the Blatty-directed The Exorcist III (1990) - a neatly designed jump scare.

I saw Exorcist 3 when it came out (1990) and seeing that image brought back that scare vividly. Oh how I jumped! I seriously do not want to watch the YouTube clip, not even with the lights on with my mother beside me to tell me there's nothing to be scared of.

I totally get you.
I am physically incapable of watching that clip.
I absolutely love this movie, but I have watched it only a handful of times since 1991 and, for whatever reason, I find it to be one of the most disturbing and unsettling films out there.
And the fact that it accomplishes this reaction without any graphic violence or gore is almost unheard of.
I think it's mainly due to the combination of dialogue, cinematography and especially the sound design--the latter is just jaw-droppingly good.
It sets up a creepy atmosphere from almost the first minute.
The Jesus statue eyes opening, then the dream sequence (hi, Fabio!), the old ladies on the ceiling, the confessional... just everything.

That first time seeing the hallway scene... man, we literally jumped backwards over the back of the sofa.
We thought the scare was over with because a minute earlier that guy jumped into the frame to cuss out the nurse who disturbed him.
Brilliant fake-out.
