Morricone never did, but maybe Revell will.

What do you think?

Isn't there a saying to the effect- imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?

Its all ambient synth noodling. I'm sure it'll draw comparisons but really its all so anonymous and non-descript its hard to say "Revell did this" or "Zimmer did that" or "hitting the A below middle C on some starscape pre-set on a Roland synth" played that.

I say let the lawyers work it out--that's what it comes down to these days anyway.
The most that one can shoot for is an adjustment in the composer credits and maybe get some of that nice Dune cash.
big grin

Sorry Totoro, I know you hate Zimmer. And I'm not a big fan of his work myself, but There's no ground to what you're trying to suggest here.
I don't see anything even remotely similar except for the ethnic/ambient vibe.

I don’t hear too much similarity because they’re both relatively ambient approaches. Revell’s is at least structured a bit more and the Underground Lake Vision cue at least has dynamic range between its instruments like strings, woodwinds and harp. It also has somewhat of an ending.

Zimmer’s is really dull and heavy and drones on in a pseudo-pedal point without an ending but the typical sudden bass drop.

I can’t even believe I forced myself to listen to it again to analyze it. His stuff is boring and goes absolutely nowhere. He scored a mood. And in this case he’s just copying what he did for the “busy little bee” sequence in “Gladiator”. Which if you go back to interviews he is SOOOOO proud of himself for that cue for supposedly being so dark and edgy and classical and operatic and running counter to what’s happening onscreen and being wankfest and so wanky.

But if you weren’t alive or old enough to have seen “Gladiator” then you obviously wouldn’t know immediately that he’s copying his 20-year old soundtrack. But copied or not, it’s a boring approach.

Not a fan of Zimmer, and find his new Dune material to be totally predictable and obvious (and full of the same old Zimmer tricks - wailing vocals, simple ostinatos, and heavy drones). All of that said, I don't think we should be surprised that two composers have similar takes on the same source material.

Sorry Totoro, I know you hate Zimmer.

Yes, it almost looks personal. Like Zimmer stole his bike or something.

Well then, it almost looks like Zimmer must have stolen a lot of bikes.
And I'd bet that they are all the same kind, over and over again. wink

Zimmer did chase me on a bike yesterday after my comment on his 40,000,000 hours of sketches, but I managed to escape because he got a flat tire, probably because he was oversized for the bike, which looked like it might have been stolen from a kid.

I'm sorry for the kid but happy that it gave me enough of an advantage to make a getaway.

Glad you are not Ennio Morricone otherwise he would have stolen a lot of your music...

Do not feel sorry.

Is there anything on this scores besides ethnic/ambient vibes?

No surprise, but it's quite embarrassing that a suposed A List composer ended with a score for a major motion picture that sounds almost the same as one composed by a B List composer for a low budget miniseries from the same source material, don't you think?

Enigma should probably have a gripe as well.
This is Enigma Redux light

If the movie ends up being huge, then Enigma should definitely hitch their wagon to it.
It's due for a return to the top of the charts!

Wait, you do mean Cretu, right?
I just want to make sure!

Cretu, yup, right on the money
Yeah, this could easily be mistaken for Enigma tracks.
Now I have to dig up my Enigma discs
Also funny, coincidence, Enigma and Zimmer, both German

Man, that takes me back.
When that first album came out you couldn't swing a dead cat by the tail without hearing it played somewhere.
Not that I minded--back then it was pretty cool. It was sort of a new thing at the time.

huge hit, Return to Innocence, it was everywhere.
It was part of the start to push DJ, rave music out of the under culture.

Now I just remember "The Matrix" trailer with the Enigma song in it and people were disappointed it wasn't the music in the film... but then forgot about it when the movie was awesome.

That was basically the end of the 1990's New Age revival.
