I was cleaning up my filing cabinet and found an interview with Alex North from the Los Angeles Free Press dated November 30, 1970. I don't know if this interview is the first mention of the replacement of North's score to Kubrick's 2001. Was this discussed in The Making of Kubrick's 2001 by Jerome Agel, which was published in 1970? I can't find my copy of Tony Thomas's book about movie music, though that dates from 1973, and Irwin Bazelon's Knowing the Score which also deals with it was published in 1975.

Thanks for posting. North was an interesting man. Back in the late 80s/early 90s it was because of Alex North mentioning in an interview how much he admired Revueltas's music that I got curious about the Mexican composer and started seeking out his music on CD. At the time very little was available but within a few years there was a resurgence of interest and very quickly there were a couple of dozen CDs with his music on the market.

Great to finally know North's feelings on the subject of 2001. From many other accounts, some of them even saying that he was devastated when his music wasn't used are now confirmed not be be true. He says himself that Kubrick was honest from the beginning about his musical leanings. From what we knew before this interview, I believe many thought as did I, that Kubrick was somewhat of a villain in the proceedings.

Thanks for sharing this telling interview.

I'm glad that back in the day, North also did rework some of his Main Title thematic material into THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN. 2001 and SHOES were both MGM productions and it all found it's way so to speak. Thanks again mistermike.

Yes, I echo these thanks. Around the time of Goldsmith's rerecording, the impression given in this interview was the one I first learned, but when the more demoralizing view took hold, I couldn't return to whatever had given me this impression (I'm sure it was some other source), so it's nice to have confirmation.

I also love the fact that he was going to rework it specifically for Lovell, Swigert & Haise (huh, all of them Jr.s). It reminds me of the difference in potency for those who lived through a story I only know as finished. Apollo 13 happened 6 months before this interview, and those three days must have been palpably stressful and suspenseful in a way just knowing about it, even seeing the film, perhaps can't restore.

Great interview. I have one from Soundtrack Magazine from the 80s with North. Seemed like a gentleman.

You can find segments from 2001 in many later North scores, like SHANKS and DRAGONSLYAER.
