The 1990s saw a revival of the Hollywood disaster epic, with two large-budget volcano films competing in early 1997—and both Dante’s Peak and Volcano had their soundtracks released by Varèse Sarabande. Following the Deluxe Edition of Volcano in 2020, this 2CD set of Dante’s Peak expands its massive John Frizzell score—with themes by James Newton Howard—in a triumph of explosive, symphonic ’90s action.

Dante’s Peak was directed by Roger Donaldson (The Bounty, Species) and starred Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton in escaping a Mount St. Helens-type blast in Washington State. James Newton Howard was initially hired to compose the score, but left due to scheduling. Howard contributed two main themes, for the volcano and the film’s romantic relationship, and recommended John Frizzell for the score (as the two had done on The Rich Man’s Wife).

Working at a furious pace, Frizzell composed a massive, symphonic score befitting the life-or-death struggle of outrunning a catastrophic volcano—but also containing moments of grandeur, suspense and softer contemplation. “I’m very structural,” Frizzell told Tim Greiving, interviewed jointly with Donaldson for the new liner notes. “So I actually drew maps of the film, placing James’ themes in key moments and trying to break down structurally how I wanted to have a roadmap—knowing how much tension I needed to have and where I could hit the throttle.”

Varèse Sarabande’s Deluxe Edition of Dante’s Peak features the 93-minute score across disc one and two, with the 1997 half-hour album at the end of disc two.

Limited to 2000 copies

So from this track list it seems James Newton Howard actually composed six full cues for this score before leaving the project, aside from Frizzell using at least two of his themes throughout. Fascinating. I love Howard and I've long heard this is one of Frizzell's very best, so very tempted to order.

By the way Mr. Jack, this has been one of Varese's most requested titles for years. Every time they say a new batch is coming up, they've been inundated and like a third of the replies on Facebook have been various people demanding Dante's Peak. So I don't think this is barrel-scraping and I think they'll sell a lot of these, personally.

Glad that the other composers are properly credited on this release.

Yeah, they also did a thorough job of this on their Deluxe Edition of Looney Tunes: Back in Action earlier this year. Might be a contractual obligation of course, but I always really appreciate knowing exactly who composed each cue when there are multiple composers involved. I simply assign a primary "album artist" in iTunes and then correctly tag composer(s) cue by cue. Why? Example: if Shirley Walker contributed to just a cue or two on The Black Stallion or White Fang, I want to know about it and have those cues come up when I search her name in iTunes, even if she wasn't the primary composer on that project.

It's great to know exactly which cues Alfred Newman and Bernard Herrmann each contributed to The Egyptian, and I really wish I had a breakdown of cue credits for the John Powell/Harry Gregson-Williams collaborations, especially Chicken Run (maybe if that score gets a deluxe expanded release some day...)

So JNH wrote the main theme and someone else wrote the rest of the score (more or less.)
Now I know why I love the main theme but don't remember the rest of the score.

I only had the main theme for this on the old Varese compilation CD for disaster movies (great compilation, BTW) and enjoyed it, so I figured I'd take a chance to discover the rest of the score.
