As posted in the birthday thread, I thought it was more appropriate to have a separate obituary thread.
Theodorakis -- one of the oldest film composer around prior to his death -- has just passed away, age 96. Everyone knows ZORBA THE GREEK, SERPICO and that kind of stuff, but what are some lesser known works you'd like to highlight?
I love all of his music. Away from the usual suspects I would highlight his evocative scores for Michael Cacoyannis' Greek tragedies.
Totally agree. The scores for the Serpico Z and the state of siege were not original. The music existed already. But the Greek tragedies...O boy !!! What scores!!!!!
Because of the other recent Mikis thread, I have been playing many of his scores lately. A great 2 CD set to get, if you can find it is Mikis Theoforakis On Screen. It contains the complete albums of Z, A State of Seige, Serpico, and Phaedra. I also love Zorba the Greek and the pulsating The Day the Fish Came Out.
I love Miklos. I love Richard Wagner. I often love the art. Not the artist. I'll knock back a glass of Ouzo to his memory at Mooonshadows in Malibu while raging about the global conspiracy. Opa!
Theodorakis along with Manos Hadjidakis shaped modern Greek song and cultural life in this country in general. He was one of those larger than life personalities that are sorely missed nowadays...
And since nobody mentioned LES AMANTS DE TERUEL, I'm posting Edith Piaf's rendering of Mikis's song "Omorfi Poli" (Beautiful City) written ten years before the movie, one of the last things "La Môme" recorded before her death.
