Alien (Goldsmith) is the best.
All the other 3 are great in their own way, but the first one is very unique, eerie and beautiful.

Alien 3 by Elliot Goldenthal is by far the best, it is easily the most imaginative and consistent score in the series.

I'd put Jerry Goldsmith's Alien on a distant second place. It has in particular quite good Main Title and End Title cues even if i'm not that fond of most of the rest of the score.

As for the other scores in the series, I don't like them. It should be obvious that neither James Horner nor John Frizzell (or any of the other composers in the series) have the chops of a Goldenthal or Goldsmith.

In-context: ALIEN. On album: ALIEN 3. ALIENS is a masterpiece too, one of Horner's best. But comes short just by a narrow margin compared to the aforementioned. ALIEN 4 is good, better than its reputation. The AvP movies have some good individual moments. PROMETHEUS is good, especially the Life theme. ALIEN: COVENANT is fine.

Not a bad apple in the basket, but considerable range in quality.

Jerry Goldsmith: ALIEN

But Horner's ALIENS is terrific and perhaps my favorite James Horner score, but because of cues like "Face Huggers" more than "Bishop's Countdown". Great score.

This is a tough call. The A L I E N films have been spoiled for great music.

For me, it has to come down to either Goldsmith's Alien or Goldenthal's Alien 3. They're both such marvelous scores in their own ways and so very perfect for their respective films. I feel like I could go either way here on any given day.

I also love Frizzell's shrieking electronics and haunting ambience in Resurrection. Again, just a perfect score for the film's aesthetic and a real delight to listen to apart from the film.

While I love Horner in general, I've never grown as personally attached to Aliens, either the film or the score, but there's no denying there's some stellar action material here, including "Futile Escape," "Going After Newt," and "Bishop's Countdown" (which for some time basically became the anthem for movie trailers). Fantastic main title as well.

Brian Tyler did a fantastic job with Aliens vs. Predators: Requiem too. That score is just nonstop propulsive action like only Tyler does best. I probably listen to this one on CD as much as any of the others.

Alien 3. It's the only Alien score with a love theme!

ALIEN by Goldsmith without a doubt. It's one the greatest film scores of all time IMO and I'm no Goldsmith honk.

I thought this was a dumb topic and Goldsmith's Alien the obvious winner, but when I thought about it, a lot of the first film's success is in HOW the music was used in the film, with the additional use of material from Freud etc. Neither Goldsmith's original Main Title or End Titles were used, for instance and the films better for it.

So yeah, I guess Alien 3 wins out. It's a great score that is used throughout the film without temp tracks interfering etc.

My favorite is Alien as Goldsmith intended; none of the Freud or Hanson, even though that was how the film was scored when it was released.
Goldsmith's original wonderfully highlighted the fear, isolation, desperation and other-worldliness of the first film.
Alien3 is next, I think. Goldenthal brought out some very touching music. I don't much care for the film, but I love the score.
Aliens is third. Some riveting music here and there, but a little too much of TWOK and Uncommon Valor, sometimes almost note for note.

Good thread, thanks!

ALIENS by a wide margin. Amazing score by Horner in his prime as he honed his themes and created some of the most trailer worthy music of the era.

ALIEN 3: depressing and oppressive, like the film itself. Not an easy listen, but none of these are. I wouldn't be playing these in the car for my friends....

ALIEN: I have to admit, I like portions of it, but I find a lot if it kinda dull. The climax is blistering, though.

ALIEN RESURRECTION: Good theme. One or two really nice cues. Otherwise, it doesn't stick in the memory.

None of the rest count for me. I like Brian Tyler's score because I like his "loud bombast" more than most people. The rest of the scores just lie there.

I can't choose, Henry.
I like them all--especially 1 and 3.
They all work like gangbusters for the flavors of the individual films.

Okay. Gun to my head? Number 1.
It's the original, the trendsetter for all that followed.
All the scores that succeeded it pay homage to it in some way.
