I'm with nuts_score, this is simply something benefits the corporation as a tax write off. They are beholden to their investors.

Now they don't have to spend (more) money to promote it. It would no doubt have performed poorly. Hardly a science to this!

Also, Batgirl only cost more than the underwhelming Birds of Prey thanks to the pandemic. That was easily another 10-15 million. WBD doesn't want another Birds of Prey (and neither do I).

And this is a very rare circumstance they're taking advantage of here: the complete reorganization of the entire studio and the write downs associated with that. It's not something they have the option to do 99% of the time.

Why the assumption it would've performed poorly? This is a beloved comic book character who would see her big screen solo debut, with a supporting cast of brilliant actors in roles they have played before with acclaim and fandom. The only reason it would perform poorly would be due to bad marketing or lack of support by its financiers and studio. And WB/Discovery took the L on that to benefit their malfeasance and corporate re-structuring rather than the initiative to help the movie find the audience that would've responded to it.

We are entering an era where these studios, and especially this studio, are only interested in billion dollar earners like the superhero genre and franchise sequels. And now it is evident they don't even want to attempt marketing or releasing "lower budget" movies in franchises that have a guaranteed return with just the name "Bat" in the title and a fan-favorite actor in a supporting role as a beloved character. This will not suddenly cause WB/Discovery to release great, unimpeachable movies. They will still release shit and judging by how Discovery is run it will be quickly turned over and warmed up to shovel more shit in your face regardless.

The writing is on the wall and undoubtedly the talent will abandon ship as rival studios become more focused on treating their creative workers with more respect and earnings potential.

Gotta say the lower-budget aspect to this film made me a LOT more interested in it. I always liked Batman (and his allies) better when they were functioning as detectives, and this sounds like it had a more low key noir angle to it, which again I think these directors would have knocked out of the park.

When was the last time a Hollywood studio shelved a nearly completed film because a tax write-down would be a better option than releasing it? I know something similar happened with a film called "Hippie Hippe Shake" (which had a score by Dario Marianelli), but that wasn't nearly as expensive of a production as "Batgirl":

https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/hippies-tossed-aside-in-corporate-decision-20110213-1as55.html

A much earlier example of shelved completed/nearly completed film is a Warner Bros. film called "Stop!" (1970):

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0174244/

I know there are more. But "Batgirl" might be the the most expensive film that's ever been shelved.

Yep, HIPPIE HIPPIE SHAKE was what I was going to mention too.

I read somewhere that, eventually, years after the movie was shot in 2007, the studio was required to destroy the negative as part of whatever financial agreement they worked out to dispose of the film without releasing it.

Reshooting the scenes for THE FLASH movie with a new actor essentially means you're back in production for the entire film... I mean, you realize he's the star, right?

I am not saying that would happen it's a stretch to do this.

Oh I know he is the star but WB / DC he is on thin ice.

Haven't you heard? Wokery is the greatest threat the UK has ever seen, but luckily we have the sane, reasonable people at The Daily Mail to fight the good fight.

Indeed.

Pity that this score seems to be buried along with the film. I bet it was interesting.

"In this music label subforum it was a tradition...complain about Giacchino's punny track names, claim that film music hasn't been good since marimbas and hammond organs went out of style; then some random guy makes a crappy right wing joke that wouldn't be out of place in a Dennis McCarthy thread. But now the Woke Mob is taking that all away."

Terrible films get released all the time. You got streaming, broadcast television, digital sales, BluRays, etc. All kinds of ways to recoup your losses if it bombed in the theater. And its not like they couldn't just skip the theatrical run (saving money on promotion and advertisements) and rent it out. Burning the tapes of a completed film makes no sense.

Again, there was never going to be a theatrical run. It was made to premiere on HBO Max.

The decision only makes sense to accountants. Per Variety, "it will almost certainly take a tax write-down on both films, seen internally as the most financially sound way to recoup the costs (at least, on an accountant’s ledger)."

As you say, terrible films are released all the time. As illogical as this turn of events seems, as Sherlock Holmes said, "when you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

when you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, is confirmation bias.

Holy Hyperbole Batman!! That might just be one of the most unreadable articles I've tried to read.

I must go to my basement, and put a security field around my stuff. I'm not going to be left with just kale.
