In no particular order:

The Best Years Of Our Lives - The entire homecoming sequence (including Fredric March's return)

The Barbarian & The Geisha - Finale

Soldier Of Fortune - Main Title

Plus a special mention to the theme from Hondo, which is such a classic western theme I'm surprised it was never covered at the time or has been re-recorded since.

"One Eyed Jacks" ("To Monterey And The Search" on the soundtrack album) - the scoring where Rio starts looking for Dad Longworth after escaping from prison in Sonora with Modesto. Judging from its tone you can figure out why Rio has vengeance on his mind after Longworth betrayed him.

"The Secret Invasion" - where Durrell and the girl are riding in a wagon, which starts pleasantly enough for flute and strings but ends on a harsh conclusion when the camera pans over a Nazi flag, in which the scoring becomes harsh for strings.

"The Best Years Of Our Lives" - the scoring where Fred Derry climbs into an abandoned bomber plane, and the scoring simulates machine gun fire with snare drum, a perfect example of music simulating sound effects.

Is this recent TOP list mania (started by moolik) some kind of speed dating? Does anyone really care what someone else writes???

Ahhh, not a speed date. Circle jerk. That's all these "lists" really are. That's all these message boards are.

The Daily Wrap-up:

roadshowfan
Nice selections, highlighting the inimitable BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES as well as the perhaps lesser known ones: BARBARIAN & THE GEISHA with its light touch on strings, SOLDIER OF FORTUNE's main title has that uniquely Friedhofer epicness and sensitivity without being overbearing, and a nod to HONDO which does have quite the theme for a film that has some pretty iconic John Wayne moments.

filmmusicnow
Really great examples of the more creative approaches that Friedhofer took and his specificity for adding meaning to the images on screen. Great descriptions.

Trying to respond here to make it a bit more worthwhile! It is pretty disappointing to post without any response.

Very good picks and "Homecoming" seems to be a popular favorite. RICHTOFEN & BROWN is a new one actually that I didn't know of but I really like what I'm hearing. There are bits that definitely are reminiscent of Williams and I know he admired Friedhofer. Thanks for sharing that!

Last Child
If there is no dialogue, it definitely runs that risk. I'm not a fan either and started them in protest, but with the responses I felt it was worthwhile to give everyone a response to try to elevate the conversation. Thanks for the feedback and I hope others can take the time to think about how to contribute to these boards in meaningful ways!

BISHOP'S WIFE has a nice, soft touch that Friedhofer was so good at, YOUNG LIONS is a great pick for rounding out the wonderfully brassy and unique war score (reminds me to see the film again, an underrated classic) and JOAN OF ARC I listened to recently, thanks to these boards, and appreciated how it set the tone well rather than being a tacked on "intro".

I haven't been reading these TOP list threads, but yours was different since it specified composer rather than genre, and because you started with "Go!" like it was a race to exchange info (hence the analogy to speed dating).

I don't recall specific cues, but my fav 3 Friedhofer scores are the FSM 2-fer "Between Heaven and Earth/Solder of Fortune," and "Boy on a Dolphin." My fav unreleased score is "Try and get me."

Can't narrow it down to tracks without thinking too much, but since the following three scores are PROBABLY my favourite Friedhofers, my fave cues MIGHT come from them...

ABOVE AND BEYOND
ONE-EYED JACKS
BROKEN ARROW

All we can really describe are cues from Friedhofer scores that are available. I’d prefer the Main Title and Coronation from JOAN OF ARC. (At least, the actual roadshow version has been available on video for some time. Now I wouldn’t be surprised if the heavily truncated, re-edited version with Shepperd Strudwick’s narration eventually becomes a collector’s item.)

I dunno about that since we're talking about the music, not a soundtrack release. Three great cues here. The theme is reminiscent of "Best years of our lives." Which only proves you can't have just 3 TOP tracks by anyone, so making lists isn't useful.

1. The "Platinum Blonde" theme for Jan Sterling in Ace in the Hole (the 4th track)

2. "Deck Games", 3rd track into The Revolt of Mamie Stover

3. No Man of Her Own's "New Year's Eve" - 9th track
