The Daily Wrap-up: roadshowfan Nice selections, highlighting the inimitable BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES as well as the perhaps lesser known ones: BARBARIAN & THE GEISHA with its light touch on strings, SOLDIER OF FORTUNE's main title has that uniquely Friedhofer epicness and sensitivity without being overbearing, and a nod to HONDO which does have quite the theme for a film that has some pretty iconic John Wayne moments. filmmusicnow Really great examples of the more creative approaches that Friedhofer took and his specificity for adding meaning to the images on screen. Great descriptions. Last Child Trying to respond here to make it a bit more worthwhile! It is pretty disappointing to post without any response. Spinmeister Very good picks and "Homecoming" seems to be a popular favorite. RICHTOFEN & BROWN is a new one actually that I didn't know of but I really like what I'm hearing. There are bits that definitely are reminiscent of Williams and I know he admired Friedhofer. Thanks for sharing that! Last Child If there is no dialogue, it definitely runs that risk. I'm not a fan either and started them in protest, but with the responses I felt it was worthwhile to give everyone a response to try to elevate the conversation. Thanks for the feedback and I hope others can take the time to think about how to contribute to these boards in meaningful ways! gsteven BISHOP'S WIFE has a nice, soft touch that Friedhofer was so good at, YOUNG LIONS is a great pick for rounding out the wonderfully brassy and unique war score (reminds me to see the film again, an underrated classic) and JOAN OF ARC I listened to recently, thanks to these boards, and appreciated how it set the tone well rather than being a tacked on "intro".

All we can really describe are cues from Friedhofer scores that are available. I’d prefer the Main Title and Coronation from JOAN OF ARC. (At least, the actual roadshow version has been available on video for some time. Now I wouldn’t be surprised if the heavily truncated, re-edited version with Shepperd Strudwick’s narration eventually becomes a collector’s item.)
