Some comments forums allow readers to tick an up or down arrow to signify their approval or disapproval of individual comments by others, without having to post an additional comment of their own. The tally of responses gives everyone else a clear indication of people's overall feelings about the merits (or otherwise) of the comments. The up/down arrow method also allows a response to be anonymous for those who don't want to engage in actual discussion with the person who wrote the comment.
If that system was used here, it would surely cut out a lot of the extended, back-and-forth arguing and insults that happen, with people able to simply tick an up-arrow in agreement or a down-arrow in disagreement. Opinions could be registered and displayed without getting into fights and determined attempts to always have the last word. Obviously there would still be plenty of heated debates, but perhaps they would be more interesting and on-subject than before.
Anyway, just a thought. Perhaps its been considered already. Or maybe it's too complex technically to introduce here.
I occasionally wish the site had the "likes/dislikes" buttons like on youtube. I wonder how difficult it would be to add that option. Some sites show a user's name along with their reaction.
I'm accustomed to seeing some kind of feedback option (per message) on other message boards, and miss having one here. It gets tiresome having to post something like this every time, and which can be taken ambiguously, depending on one's mood.
Folks, I would LOVE to do all this—and for that matter, require real names. This board was established, what, over 20 years ago? And the present coding is at least 10 years old, maybe 15? I don't even remember. So they're great suggestions, I just can't afford to do it.

You’ve brought up the point of real names before. Set a date and implement it. It doesn’t stop anyone from reading the board just participating. But it is probably impossible to implement.
I think it's a great idea in theory. But humans can't be trusted with any concept that can be twisted into some weird form of virtue signalling.
(Speaking for myself, on the off-chance that something I said garnered "likes", I would become even more insufferable than I already am.)
We're not launching nukes or voting for a dictator, so I think you exaggerate the potential harm. It works fine on other websites, and would be more accurate than some crazy equation like taking the total views of a thread, then dividing by number of members, etc. If you get out of hand, there's always the doghouse (ignore list).
Sites like YouTube and here, where there is contentious disagreements, often use the like/dislike thumbs up/thumbs down system to war with each other. It's quickly abused. And sure enough that is what will happen here.
No thanks. We know who the culprits who start this shit will be. We know who will then in turn use it to defend themselves and others against these malcontents. Let's not have that here.

People argue or troll in the YT comments section, but I don't see how likes/dislikes can be an issue. Firstly it's just us, not the entire internet. You'd need to be signed in, and you can only add one like/dislike per post by other members (not yourself). You can't keep hitting a like/dislike button to artificially inflate the tally. Again, other sites like tapatalk groups use emoji-abbreviated feedback and there is no problem that I've seen. It's only by writing posts that folks create contention.

Likes/Dislikes are for children who need constant validation.

Excellent points, thanks! My main reservation would be the fear that folks would just upvote or downvote without comment and the oftentimes amusing jaunty banter and back-and-forth would become more rare.
We're lucky this board is even still going.
She may not look like much, but she can still make the Zimmer run in 12 parsecs!
