I do not think that this topic has come up before, but have any John Barry fans ever come across a reason for the "Afternoon" track being composed? It is apparently not a film score extract.

"Afternoon" comes from that wonderful 1970 Columbia LP (later issued on CD by Sony),"Ready When You Are, J. B.". Alas, the liner notes mention nothing about the piece. I often wondered with its Italianate sound (mandolins?) that perhaps it was a rejected cue from the movie The Appointment (1969).

Enquiring minds wish to know. Many thanks for any info that you can provide!

In the yt comments Robert Wood claims with some confidence that it was a tune JB wrote for his house in Spain during construction.

Sounds right, I’m working on a piece for my house that’s being built in Boroughbridge. Haven’t got past the title yet, though: “Come on, Taylor Wimpey, get those windows in before Winter”.

I once made the joke it was an unused cue from Sinful Davy, but it was a joke. I must emphasise that before it becomes the next viral urban myth. It's a joke!!

Ready When You Are, J. B. ... my first non-OST John Barry album ... Spring '72 (I think) ... and for nearly 50 years it's been a (maybe: the) favourite.

I wasn't aware that Sony had released it on CD (I believe there is a rare release on the PEG label) and I recreated the album from various CD compilation releases (albeit, I replaced the final track Born Free - which appeared on both his earlier CBS/Columbia albums - with his final CBS/Columbia recording: The Persuaders!).

As for Afternoon, this track has been discussed before without any origin being determined - I'm happy to accept that mentioned above re: house in Spain. it's a lovely tune but is usually omitted from the aforesaid CD compilation releases.

One thing that was remarkable about Ready When You Are is it's the first time an unreleased cue from a score had been recorded for a compilation disc — Who Will By Our Yesterdays.

When I first heard the album, and please remember I wasn't even born when it came out, although I wasn't far behind, I nearly sprayed my mouth full of coffee all over the wall when I realised what this track was.

My only niggle is I feel the track would have been even better without that "washboard" instrument. I really wish that had been mixed down or even out of the mix.

Cheers

Did Sony not release the tracks from Ready When You Are on a budget compilation in the mid 90s simply called The Music Of John Barry along with some tracks from other earlier albums he recorded? If I remember 'Afternoon' IS included on the Themependium compilation.

I have another late 80s/early 90s one released by CBS Columbia (I think) called The Film Music Of so it's a bit confusing trying to remember what is on what!

Ready When You Are JB is now a favourite of mine too and I think the sequence can mostly be covered by the Sony Legacy 3CD set The Real John Barry, which is available at a budget price in the UK. I think only We Have all the Time in the World is missing

From the various CD compilations I've purchased over the years re: Barry's CBS/Columbia recordings:

-The Film Music of John Barry (CK44376)
-Great TV & Film Hits of John Barry (467956 2)
-The Best of John Barry - Themeology (488582 2)
-The Music of John Barry (494507 2)
-Themependium (4CD) (88697079502)

... numerous duplications smile ... only the last, 4CD set included three of the 12 tracks from the original vinyl album Ready When You Are, J.B., namely:

tr.A4 - Who Will Buy My Yesterdays
tr.B3 - Try
tr.B5 - Afternoon

Prior to that release (2007) I'd used crackly frown LP transfers from my beloved album. Basically, these three tracks had been omitted from vinyl compilation releases, the most complete then being the 24 track double album which became CD: The Music of John Barry

Of course, the 4CD set also included other CBS/Columbia recordings which until then had not had a CD release.

I stopped buying releases after Themependium so perhaps later compilation CDs do include those 3 tracks.

I'd like a CD release of The Lion in Winter, pt.II ... I can only hope.smile

Ready When You Are, JB only got released on CD "as" Ready When You Are, JB by Pendulum / PEG.

The Music of John Barry was a 1976 2LP which was basically a re-compilation of tracks from the CBS library, including SOME, but not all, tracks from Ready When You Are.

(The CD going by that name was the same program at the 1976 2LP, and in fact was issued with the same cover in one of its issues.)

However, Themependium contained (I think) all the tracks from Ready When You Are, JB.

Cheers

I've held the view that Barry liked that theme so much he wanted to do a new recording but was conscious that the album would be dominated by cues from the score to OHMSS ... it would have meant 4 of the 12 tracks ... so purposely did not reference it to the film ... and a new arrangement facilitated this.

All very confusing lol.

Of those Mitch mentioned, the only one I don't have is the Great Film and TV Hits, so I hope I'm not missing anything important from that. I assume everyone has the Polydor one like my avatar. Also like Mitch, Themependium is the last compilation I've bought as well. Thought I have enough by then!

Sounds right, I’m working on a piece for my house that’s being built in Boroughbridge. Haven’t got past the title yet, though: “Come on, Taylor Wimpey, get those windows in before Winter”.

I love it, but think there might be a more Barry-esque title for your piece. How about "The Wailerers"?

smile

We’ve been wondering whether we should name the house. There’ll be a couple of small cherry trees in the front, so we thought about “Sakura” or even “Cheryomushki”, but I think “Wailerers” might be a contender!

I have nothing to add to the provenance of the track…

As far as I can recall, there's nothing on that 1991 compilation (yikes - 30 years ago!) that isn't on the other releases ... except that tr.8 The Lion in Winter is the OST Main Title rather than the CBS/Columbia re-recording.

Off topic, but you will be aware (I presume) that the version of Space March on The Film Music of John Barry (tr.8) runs approx. 10 seconds longer than the usual CBS/Columbia release smile . Also, of course, the first half of The Chase (tr.12) is a different version from the usual release ... this portion (1'57") also featured on the Columbia/Legacy re-release of the film's OST, as a bonus track.

I used to know all these variations, omissions et al/ ... now I have to check ... too much other music has passed between the ears smile

I think we'll leave the Polydor recordings for another thread ...

'fraid not. On checking it had only 8 of the 12 tracks, with "the missing" ones being:

-tr.A2 We Have All the Time in the World ... OST: Louis Armstrong version
-tr.A3 Romance for Guitar & Orchestra ... Shirley Bassey's title song from Deadfall is included
-tr.A6 The Lion in Winter ... OST: Main Title is included
-tr.B6 Born Free ... OST: Matt Monro version

I did have to check ... 10 -12 years ago I'd have known! frown

Plus, my theory is that The More Things Change was an earlier effort as "the" song for OHMSS. Even the title of the song suggests the transition to a new Bond. What's the saying? The more things change, the more they stay the same? Who Will Buy My Yesterdays? may even have been another song attempt.

Of course, Nina van Pallandt did record The More Things Change--with Hal David's lyrics.

So it's possible that Ready When You Are could have had as many as six tracks from OHMSS!

I was in my teen years when this album came out and was just delighted with it. I did wonder why it did not include themes from Petulia and Boom!

Many, many years later when I heard The Lion in Winter Part 2 I was just floored. I would love to see this get a CD release.

One other thing . . .

Of the three CBS albums JB did in the 60s Ready When You Are, J. B. is the only one to appear on CD in its original format.

PEG did put out a CD that I thought would duplicate John Barry Conducts His Greatest Movie Hits--same cover, track listings looked the same, but one of the tracks was different: Wednesday's Child from The Quiller Memorandum was replaced by an alternate version, either the main or end title.

Great Movie Sounds of John Barry, a really important album in Barry's career, has never been released on CD, although all of the tracks can be found on various JB CBS compilations.

Thanks for that Mitch. I didn't know that about The Chase track, it's the PEG release I have of that score.

Yes, I probably shouldn't have mentioned the Polydor recordings!

Tall Guy, Stephen, MusicMad, et al, thank you all very much for your kind input.

I don't recall discussing "Afternoon" before, but at least it revived a chat on the topic of the "Ready When You Are, J.B." album. One of Barry's finest "Best of" works.

As many of you are just as confused as I often am on the bewildering topic of Barry's CBS and Polydor releases, I think I should start a thread on THAT topic.

Many Thanks again,
Jay
