First, know that all the thematic material in this 1982 film score is by Cole Porter.

John Lanchberry, assisted by John Dalby, adapted Porter tunes into a truly wonderful, effective underscore for one of the best adapatations of an Agatha Christie novel. Peter Ustinov is, again, Hercule Poirot, and he is joined by Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg, James Mason, Sylvia Miles, Roddy McDowall, Denis Quilley, Colin Blakely, Jane Birkin and Nicholas Clay.

It's a witty, bitchy, funny film with murder and a little mayhem before the final scene.

Love the movie and the adaptation of Porter songs is brilliant. I was so thrilled when a CD finally appeared with the music. Instant mood booster.

The entire album is officially on YT:

It shows you don't need original music for a film.
Cleverly done adaptations can be enough.

Roddy McDowall's performance is a joy to watch in that film.

A little bit of trivia...

Lanchbery is perhaps best known for his work in the ballet world. Much in the manner by which he scored EUTS, he arranged classical music to create ballet scores, mostly for the British Royal Ballet. Examples include "La Fille Mal Gardée" (Herold) and "A Month in the Country" (Chopin). He also composed original music for "Peter Rabbit and Tales of Beatrix Potter."

I've been a fan of EVIL UNDER THE SUN since I first saw the film many years ago. Great music.

John Lanchberry also did a great score for the silent IRON HORSE from the 1920's.
