A truly glorious score, to the delightful Don Bluth animated musical, with some great songs by Ahrens/Flaherty, supported by a strong voice cast, lovely animation and a warm, emotional tale.
I've watched the film countless times, as I had 3 nieces who never tired of watching it, when they were growing up.
I had no complaints, it's a joyful film.
Newman received his only (to date) Oscar nomination*, for his adapting and scoring of the film.
The song/score album had the wonderful songs, followed by about 23 minutes of score, a delightful collection of highlights by David Newman, but obviously missing some other tremendous high points.
There is a promo out there, with the full Newman score, in very good sound, but a Deluxe/Expanded edition would be nice.
This track has always been a particular favourite of mine, just glowing in tenderness and beauty...and melancholy.

What say you?

*My opinion...He should have won...easily...but you know the Oscars!!

Of course I adore this score! I remember taking my young daughter to see this film, and absolutely dreading it -- and then my ears perked up because the music was incredible. A perennial favorite, and I think one of David Newman's very best efforts.

It’s a great score that should have won the Oscar and I’ve always liked the film with very memorable songs (I personally consider Secret of NIMH Bluth’s best film, but this is inarguably his most popular film). In fact, a few years ago, I went to see the recent stage adaptation as a combination graduation/birthday present and loved it. In the pre-Disney buyout days, I used to hope for an expanded edition paired with father Alfred’s score for the 1956 version of this story. Of course, I doubt Disney would even consider such a pairing, though they might consider making this part of the Legacy collection which I might buy if it isn’t another Hunchback fiasco.

Didn´t even know that this score was nominated for an oscar....
It´s indeed a great score and why it hasn´t seen the light of day except only the short version...I don´t understand.
It´s one of Newman´s best.
And over 50 min. of score is missing on that song /score album, I think.

This is a really good score. And I like the songs. Jim Cummings is a freak of nature in the best way. "How do I sing EXACTLY like Christopher Lloyd would sing if Christopher Lloyd could sing?"

Yes, I was sure it was actually Lloyd singing IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT when I first heard it.

I was like "Great Scott, Marty!! I didn't know he was such a theatrical singer" wink
