Okay...so I finally got around to watching both the film and listening to the 50th anniversary release of the score. I don't know what took me so long to watch the film but I absolutely loved it. And the score release from LLL and MM is phenomenal. The liner notes from Matessino are outstanding; it seems like a real labor of love. Forgive me for asking what may be obvious to others - I've read through the entire booklet but am still not entirely clear (the couple of drinks I've had don't help) - but what exactly is the "playbacks and additional score" section on disc 3 of the release? Was the purpose to include more of Williams' underscore minus dialogue and effects? I just wanted to better understand the differences among the different discs (3 in all) that are basically variations of the same tracks, with a few additions here and there. Again, wonderful release that every fan of John Williams or Fiddler should own.

Since you said you recently watched the film and enjoyed it and all 3 discs of this, I humbly suggest you next check out two episodes of Maurizio Caschetto's The Legacy Of John Williams podcast in which Mike Matessino was a guest and Fiddler on the Roof was discussed, and just listening to that will answer all your questions better than I possibly could. Here are the two episodes: https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2021/12/03/fiddler-on-the-roof-podcast-pt1/ https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2022/03/04/fiddler-on-the-roof-podcast-pt2/ To answer your question as best I can: Disc 1 is the original soundtrack album in glorious stereo, including tracks prepared for it that didn't make the initial LP pressings back in '71. Disc 2 is also stereo and presents as much music as possible without dialogue over it, as well as many differences between film and album - different takes, different ideas, and sometimes different Isaac Stern violin lines present or not present. The unfortunate aspect of this whole project is that the original scoring masters are completely lost, so it wasn't possible to restore the entire score from scratch like most MM / JW expansions. Instead, the best they had was the mono music&effects stem of the film. So disc three presents additional score cues from that source, with some sound effect removal applied, combined with the original playback version of songs, which were also in mono. The playback versions were recorded before filming and then lip-synced to on set, and offer some differences from the final songs; some different tempos, different keys, etc. So with these mono playbacks a whole disc could be created to release them as well as the mono score cues, which wouldn't have had a home otherwise. I'm sure I didn't explain that as well as Mike does in the podcast.

I know it's a little late for asking, but can you confirm that the music from the scene where soldiers on horses attack the people in town in second part of film (including a boyfriend of Topol's daughter, I guess) is included? Cause I cannot find it anywhere on thos 3 discs. No, the music for Perchik’s arrest is not included as there were no good elements for it and there were too many sound effects over it on M&E track.
