One of my favorite experiences in the early years of NBC's Saturday Night at the Movies was seeing films from the 20th Century-Fox library I had never heard of or seen.

One was "Bird of Paradise" which enthralled me from beginning to end. The beautiful photography and the tale of a Frenchman falling in love with a beautiful island girl was terrific, especially given that there was a forbidding witch doctor and a volcano to muddle the proceedings.

Louis Jourdan, Jeff Chandler and Debra Paget were wonderful, IMO, but it was the glorious photography and the atmospheric and beautiful score by Daniele Amfitheatrof that really made the film memorable for me.

I was ecstatic when the soundtrack was released by Varese Sarabande. This cue is called "Tenga Returns". Tenga was the Chandler character and he returns to the island with his friend portrayed by Jourdan.

I think it's a progressive score for 1951...and remarkably performed by the 20th Century-Fox studio orchestra.

Tenga da´nke Daniele.

An aural paradise ... that's not for the birds!

Thus far in my Amfitheatrof odyssey, Bird of Paradise is my favorite - residing, as it does, within my Top 25 soundtracks.

Never saw this movie, but the VS Club CD is regularly listened-to thanks to the advanced chromatic writing of D.A.

Being a follower (in my parallel classical music appreciation) of compositions by Karol Szymanowski, I'm enamored by Daniele's florid harmonic vernacular.

If one is receptive toward this film score, then one might also like Loek Dikker's The 4th Man even though there is no connection between the two.

Here is a generous sampling of all the music on soundtrack:

Wonder if Alfred Newman contributed to this. As I recall, “Kalua,” the love theme, was used in Newman’s concept album, “The Magic Islands.”
