I was listening to NIGHTWING the other night. I think this such a great wee score with a really great ‘feel’ about it. It’s a really shame it sounds so poor though. That bothers me more than the missing part. Guess there’s pretty much zero chance of us ever getting a better release though so something is better than nothing.
What do you recon your favourite one is Henry?

Quite an achievement, henry. What's your next goal? Getting all of Morricone's?

spook, regarding NIGHTWING, I thought I'd read somewhere that the missing music for the batty climax isn't really missing at all, as it was tracked in from an earlier scene, which is present on the CD in the right place. I am very probably wrong about that. Perhaps you could put me right?

Congratulations! smile I have been going the same way too, but experience shows that something new pops up every now and then - and not just in terms of new releases, but also some things you were not aware of before.

Don’t think so Graham. Doug from Intrada talked about it years ago and it seems the climactic cue is missing. Shame. I’d love to see this come out again with much better sound and maybe even hopefully that cue.

Henry, how many Mancini soundtracks do you have? Or in other words how many are commercially available. I usually don't collect every soundtrack of a single composer, not even Williams or Horner. But there are plenty of other composers that I need to explore more.

I have about 90, but some are twofers on the same disc like in the set HENRY MANCINI: THE CLASSIC SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION which I highly recommend.smile

Hi spook! I pretty much love them all, but my favorite Mancini theme just might be his NEWHART theme. My favorite song might be MOON RIVER and score is hard, maybe THE PINK PANTHER, THE THORN BIRDS or SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE.smile

I have just over 100 CD's by Hank but less scores than Henry since my collection includes various compilations and a host of his albums as an arranger / conductor as rereleased by RCA Spain, Dutton Vocalion, etc. No doubt he was a unique composer characterized by a very elegant style. My favourite themes are the ones from PETER GUNN, EXPERIMENT IN TERROR, HATARI!, CHARADE, THE PINK PANTHER, ARABESQUE, WAIT UNTIL DARK, THE THIEF WHO CAME TO DINNER, SILVER STREAK, etc but there are so many of them. NIGHTWING belongs to the scores I didn't find yet.

Well, start small. You only have to buy one soundtrack album to get Leonard Bernstein's filmography.

Yeah, Newhart theme is infectious and so lovely. The others you mention are wonderful too.

Vince DiCola too, I think he only has three soundtracks, ROCKY IV, STAYING ALIVE and TRANSFORMERS.

Solium, the full version of the NEWHART theme is on a cd called PREMIER POPS conducted by Mancini.smile

I have a lot of Mancini, a lot, including that massive box with, what, 16 or so of his soundtrack albums. Most of the 60s stuff, missing some things from later in his career.

What i love most are those slow melodies with an active rhythm--themes from Hatari, Arabesque, Experiment in Terror, and especially Charade and Moon River, perhaps my favorite movie song. Peter Gunn is classic detective music.

My favorite scores are The White Dawn, Molly Maguires, The Glass Menagerie, and Lifeforce. I would like to hear more of his darker scores--like the ones mentioned on this thread. I would love to hear his entire Frenzy score.

What I don't care for is his tendency to write really cute music. He did it very well and very often. I don't criticize the music; it's just not what I gravitate towards.

All the source music from the 60s is hit or miss for me. I recently played both Charade albums--score and re-recording and just didn't enjoy most of the source cues, but all those variations of the main theme were incredible.

So, I'll probably never own all of them, but I continue to explore what I don't have and add to my collection as budget allows.
