The Clifton Sleigh theme is classic Mancini - love the clarinet lead. That's why I plunked down so much money when I too turned my nose up at it originally and it then went out of print and I realized I just had to have it.

I too wish for expansions of the first and better Panther flicks some day. But I've got to say that Pink Panther and Return are two pretty fantastic albums as is.

The Pink Panther theme uses perfect fifths for the harmony. The Sleigh theme uses the minor 6th. Clever.

That's a very cool point, Roy - thanks!

My copy arrived in the mail, which is a nice treat! Does anyone know of or are able to post individual artwork for each of the three discs? I'll also check online...

I asked Quartet about individual covers, but got no reply.
Although, It's not so hard with Trail & Curse - we can use covers to original Intrada & Quartet releases. But in case of Son - yes, need to do search )))

The artwork for "Son" is on the RCA release from1993. It shows Benigni with his hands up and the panther's finger in his back like he's under arrest. Is this what you're looking for?

Thanks, Tim! It was an absolute pleasure being on your radio show to discuss this and some other end of year releases.

Tim’s show is brilliant and it’s a clear labour of love. I’m going to write/talk more about his show in detail another time because there’s an aspect of it that I think is important to film music fandom both today and into the future—and I want to explore that thread.

When Tim and I were chatting, it occurred to me that Mancini at this time of year is somehow magical—for me, at least. Santa Claus The Movie is a seasonal favourite, but his Pink Panther scores are equally as enjoyable and accessible.

I don’t know if it’s the lightness that Mancini gave them, or that his music reminds me of happy times I spent with my grandparents watching the Pink Panther series. I can’t go past a Pink Panther or two or three this time of year.

What impresses me about Mancini’s Pink Panther scores is that he never seemed to be lazy or on auto-pilot. The quality of the films seemed to diminish, especially following Peter Sellers’ death. But Mancini was always giving it what it needed. He even did a fresh arrangement of the title theme each time. So, whilst comedy scoring isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, Mancini’s music brings me a smile, a laugh, and a lightness that helps lift my spirits at this time of year.

Sorry if I've missed it being discussed elsewhere, but how come Curse has completely different track names to the prior release?! Even more weird since that was also on Quartet so you think they'd have just kept the track names. They don't even appear to be similar. I thought I was going mad but Soundtrack Collector confirms it: https://www.soundtrackcollector.com/title/27160/Curse+Of+The+Pink+Panther

I'm probably missing something...

So does anyone who's received this have any comments about the expanded release of Son of the Pink Panther which premiered on this set?

My very unscientific review:

In January 2020 (according to the Apple Music app), listened to Milan release of Son of the Pink Panther for the first time in years and found it pretty dreary, especially compared to what had come before.

Listened to this new release three times and have enjoyed it very much!

What changed my mind? Is it the expanded presentation? Superior sound? Or am I just in a better mood than I was in 2020? I honestly couldn't tell you.

But I definitely like it!

Are there any news from the first three movies? It would be nice, if Quartet releases "Pink Panther" (expanded), "A Shot in the Dark" and "Return of the Pink Panther" (expanded). Are they maybe working on it? And how much music is missing from the first and the third movie? There was a Sony-album filled with a lot of music from the first and third movie, so I think they are quiet well represented.

ALL, repeat ALL of the music is missing from the first movie — the album was a new separate recording.

I think the third movie was a rare case of the original album actually being taken from the film recording… maybe there’s not a ton unreleased from that but I would gratefully buy a remastered (and expanded by whatever, even a few minutes) new edition with new cover art and liner notes. I’m hoping Quartet does the entire series!

Obviously A Shot in the Dark is the most needed, by far. I don’t care if it’s mono only. Gimme gimme gimme (please!)

Yo-ho, yo-ho! Thanks, Yavar. That the music from the first movie is missing, was completely new for me. I cannot hear a difference between the Sony-soundtrack and the score within the movie. Let's hope at least for a "A Shot in the Dark" release.

Mancini's 100th birthday is April 24, 2024. hopefully it will be celebrated with some unreleased scores.
Maybe "10" ?

How much Mancini scores are still unreleased? Hey, Yavar, maybe you can make a list similar to your Goldsmith list? I don't think it is so much like Goldsmith or Williams.

Those lists take quite a bit of work. smile I still haven't finished my Bernstein one (or rather I did several years ago, but it crashed when I tried to update the post, and all my work was lost).

Occasionally I feel like doing one for Horner or Williams to join my Goldsmith/Poledouris/Rozsa/Bernstein ones, and Mancini is another good candidate. But I don't know that I'll get around to it given I have my hands full producing a podcast now!
