Great! I also went to music school at one time. I loved playing the cello. But I never understood why we were asked to write essays as homework.
Then you didn't have good teachers. Writing teaches you how to think clearly, writing an essay forces you to consequently think through a subject and articulate your thoughts in a way that allows others to understand your point of view. Of all things Universitys can teach you, writing (and by extension thinking) is by far the most valuable of them all. That is why.
