I was wondering how many people on this forum attended this presentation by ASMAC on zoom today.

Max Steiner: Maestro of Movie Music: Documentary Film Screening with Diana Friedberg, Steven C Smith, John Morgan and William Stromberg. Dan Redfeld - Moderator

This is a brand new and very complete documentary about Max Steiner that fills in many details of Max’s life and work. It’s beautifully executed, a real labor of love and Ray Faiola performs as Steiner’s voice.

Some 200+ people worldwide attended but I didn't recognize any names.

Of special interest was the participation of John Morgan and William Stromberg who appeared together. John, who actually knew Max, is still interested in recording another version of King Kong. I sure hope he can find the backing.

It’s interesting that there has been no mention, at least that I’m aware of, on this forum. This place is supposed to be for the appreciation of film music, or so I thought.

Oh well.

The documentary will appear on TCM and HBO but can be ordered at this link: https://dianafriedberg.com/max-steiner

Yes.

Surprising to me was how well it grounded the beginnings of film music history. Also, she had a real wealth of material to show, so we weren't seeing talking heads and b-roll for 60% of the run time, but good, moment-specific images or clips. It's quite something.

John, who actually knew Max...

I didn't know that. Steiner died in 1971, so Morgan must have been a "kid" in his teens or twenties at the time. Would love to know more about how they knew each other.

If I recall probably, they met through Fred Steiner (no retaliation to Max). And yes John was very young.

The part that was a revelation to me was how technical Max was.

Was about to order until I discovered that shipping to Ireland would incur a charge of $65!!! Much and all as I love Max it doesn't extend to that level of shipping charge! Anyway, I have applied a workaround which will leave me with a shipping cost of $3.50 plus approx. $18... To any other potential buyers from Ireland...use AddressPal!

There are some pages about their relationship in Steven C. Smith's insightful book "Music by Max Steiner".

Hey Amer, old friend, I'm ordering this for myself. Sorry that you had ordering difficulties.

I'll be glad to order an extra one for you and send it to you.
We did this before, years ago.

Do you want a DVD, a Blu-Ray...or BOTH? I'm ordering both, myself. No problem to double up for either or both.
Just send me your choice and your current mailing address privately.
Are you still in Karachi?

Cool. Two movie music documentaries on streaming services in the same month - thinking of Amazon's Bond doc.

We are not alone!

According to Tony Thomas' book "Film Score: A View From The Podium" when Fred Steiner first met Max Steiner, he knocked on the door to Max's home, Max Steiner asked if he was related to him. Fred said no, and Max said, "Come on in".

I wish everyone had HBO Max and could watch this documentary. It is excellent. At least it can be ordered.

Even those youngers who think movie scores began in the 90’s should see this for several reasons.

First of all, Steiner comes through as laying the core foundation for music synched to movies. This show really delves into how he composed the first scores that indelibly enhanced and enriched movies. Of course, this led to studios hiring a lot of composers to score movies.

The show points out that Steiner laid the template for Star Wars and John Williams.

Han Zimmer received the Vienna Max Steiner Composer Award in 2018, and he is thanked in the end credits.

Ahem, this documentary is NOT just for oldies.

Our own Ray Faiola is mentioned in this show and acknowledged in the end credits.

We hear often from John Morgan and William Stromberg, and we see Stromberg conducting. You will also hear from Jon Burlingame, Richard Kraft, Friedhofer in tapes, Steve C. Smith who wrote Steiner’s current biography and many others.

Of course, some of his key scores are dissected. (Smith's biography really dissects his scores more completely.) Also, the show acknowledges how well he kept up with the changing times by composing the huge hit in 1960 called A Summer Place. Writing music from King Kong to A Summer Place is certainly amazing.

I was well-educated during these two hours of viewing.

I would love to get the blu-ray of this documentary. But it only seems to be available through the filmmaker's website where they charge $65 for the postage to send it to Germany. While I am aware that the post office has raised prices this is ridiculous. With sales tax and handling fee added on arrival in Germany this would ultimately raise the price for the disc to about $ 130. Sorry, but that's more than I would pay for any film.

Thanks for the reminder about this documentary, I need to place an order for the blu-ray! I remember that this was one of the last in-person events I registered to attend before the lockdown in March 2020, at which point it was canceled.

You can watch the entire movie on the following site. It is placed after the written interview with the director. It seems a legit site:
