What a tremendous oral and aural complement to the Steven Smith bio. It was like watching a film adaptation of a non-fiction novel. My goodness, comprehensive while impeccably paced. Kudos to the editor(s?), the 2 hours flew by along the order of our earliest Zoom discussions. Smitty and the curator fella knocked it out of the park with their enthusiasm and expertise. In fact, add in Morgan, Stromberg and the rest of the usual suspects and what came across unanimously was a labor of love. Oh once again I had that wonderful feeling it was specially produced for fools like me!
Love the way Murray Spivack was given his due. And the mind continues to boggle at the thought of a Steiner/Friedhofer tandem. The inclusion of The Informer's click-track "drip" execution was inspired.
I am glad that they mentioned the Ronald story without dwelling on it. The reading experience correctly supplies all you need to know and more from a personal biographical standpoint, warts and all. Here the point was well made on the shortcomings of the man and father with the focus maintained on his music (in harmony with the title).
"Virtually invented film music as we know it." "More than anyone else shaped the art of film scoring." "Catalyst who set the standard for all motion pictures from then on." "Brilliant and innovative techniques." "Pioneer." "Created the grammar of film music." "Master of leitmotifs and themes." "Max Steiner led the way."
These are some of the accolades sprinkled throughout the production and the evidence to justify such praise is well-presented. Bravo, bravo.
Near the middle of the documentary (48min 47sec), there is a clip from a TV interview with Steiner. Does anyone have more details on it? I would love to see the full conversation. As far as I know , it's the only available video of him.
