Thanks for those details! I join you in wishing for a definitive Mattesino edition of the score.

Just got done with my first listen. Some notes:

1) This is a stellar release for sound quality. The tracks featuring live instruments (the jazz tracks and last three in particular) sound incredible.

2) I wasn't sure if the film order was going to be a better listening experience than the excellent original album. I wouldn't say its better, just different. I think the original album tells its own story and is in some ways more balance while the film order gives the music more room to breathe and makes the orchestral payoff at the end that much more impactful. One particular note: I think The Timeless Street does better earlier in the presentation, though, because [Old] Doc Graham's theme feels a bit like an afterthought in the film presentation.

3) On the other hand I like how the Terrance Mann/[young] Archie Graham/"The Drive Home" theme gets more airing here. The Magic Hit is a great track to have especially.

4) Dinner's Ready > Old Ball Players and should have been on the original release. Top new track for me.

5) The decision to redo Deciding to Build the Field was the right one. The alternate is an interesting footnote but lacks the spunk and energy the scene needed. Horner nailed it with the second version.

Anyway thanks LLL for this simply amazing release. Well done by all.

This is an excellent release. Well done to all.

... Deciding To Build The Field 5:54 (insert is edited at a different point)
Neil

I am listening to the album now (thank you for this release!). I'll have to do an A/B comparison but on a first pass, I'm ashamed to admit that I couldn't hear the difference between the two versions of "Deciding to Build the Field." Is there are particular part I should pay attention to?

It's very subtle, you'd probably have to look at the waveforms. I remember one of them came in at a different point. My advice is to sit back and enjoy the music and not stress about the tech stuff.

Thanks, Neil.

I dug into this yesterday. It's entirely a question of timing. The "country rock" section comes in a few seconds earlier. And then the third quiet section is placed a little differently as well.

To me it's not one of those tracks where I say "I shall listen to THIS version forever more!" You can play them to me and I bet I couldn't pick out which one it is. Unless I practice. And I'm not going to practice.

It was one of those things where I had them both edited and I looked at it in Pro Tools and I saw the differences. Obviously the album edit would go on the album, and I guess I could have stuck with that for the whole thing, but why not also include the version prepared for the film? It's just as valid.

It’s this kind of care and attention to detail, along with a great sense of the music, that makes your work stand out.

I’d I see your name on a release, it was done right.

Oh, please don't misunderstand. This was the right way to go! And thank you!

Funny story and apologies if I've told the before. I was in my junior year of college when this came out and I put the new CD in my roommate's CD player which was high up on a shelf. I hit play and hard rock started blaring. A bit taken aback I quickly scanned through each track -- each featuring some pretty hard, hard rock. I was thinking that I should have really seen the film first before buying this album. Then when I reached up to remove the CD, two CDs came out. There was already an Ozzy Osbourne CD in the player, and Field of Dreams was just sitting on top of it. D'oh!

I guess we had room for a few Ozzy tracks on this release. Sorry.

I suppose Ozzy's "See You On The Other Side' could have played whenever the ball players walked back into the cornfield...

I'll go get my coat..

Or "Mama I'm Coming Home"

Or "Road to Nowhere"

I appreciate the reply and agree with another poster that your dedication to detail is most welcome! My question came simply from a place of curiosity.

I am DEFINITELY sitting back and enjoying!

Because this threads needs a bump - its scandalous that its dropped back a few pages already- my copy arrived here in the UK today!

Lovely design work- its exactly the deluxe package I felt this score always deserved; lovely liner notes, stills etc. I know we come here for the music, but I buy the CDs for the TLC that La La Land and Intrada give their releases, and between the two labels we've had some outstanding James Horner expansions/remasters. Its what physical media has that downloads just don't.

I listened to disc one a few times while working this afternoon (I'm still working from home) and while I couldn't always give it the attention it warranted (damn mobile phones!), the 'new' pieces of music, scattered through the assembly as they are, are very good albeit mostly fragments. As someone else mentioned earlier, the omission of the track 'The Decision' from the original album seems a baffling one. Its a major part of the score where the orchestra starts to take over the score and replace the synths (culminating in 'The Place where Dreams Come True' which is the usual Horner sweeping orchestral glory).

Brilliant release though. Brainstorm next, somebody!

Mines on pre-order and I'm waiting for a restock of another score. So it will probably be awhile before I get this in my mitts.

There’s a lot of this score with wonderful archive clips of James Horner and Phil Alden Robinson talking about the music in my latest radio show if anyone would like to download and listen:
