Was it ever explained in WEST SIDE STORY?

Is the Dance at the Gym their High School Gym or is it a Community Dance just held there?

Hard to tell, since they all looked so middle aged.

I believe they were all held back a few years to catch up

There's no reason why they can't be young adults, 20-25 years of age. I don't think there's an age limit on gangs. I imagine community dances were a thing in the 50's and 60's.

There was nothing whatsoever to indicate they were high school kids. The closest would be Baby John.

In the book, they are rival teenage gangs; but I believe in both movies the gym was just a venue. "Grease" is far more egregious for this sin: that is unmistakably high school populated by 20-something students. Travolta was 24, Olivia Newton-John was 29, and Stockard Channing was 34 when they made the film. And don't get me started on John Carpenter's "Christine"!

At least in Strike Up The Band (1940) Judy Garland was the right age.

John Astin ("Glad Hand," who was conducting the dance at the gym) was a social work type who seemed to be working on behalf either of the city or some non-governmental social services organization addressing the social ills of the city. The lyrics of "Gee Officer Krupke" address a "kindly social worker" rather than a guidance counselor or any other school-related helping person, suggesting that they were involved with the adult system. Gym was a community venue for a social event for the young folks, imo. School not mentioned anywhere I recall in the original WSS.

John Astin? The guy from The Addams Family?

But wasn't it "Romeo and Juliet" time-traveled to the 50's? So that would make them high school age, right?

They are street gangs, different ages.

The dance was in a community space. It may have been a school gym, but the dance was a communty function rather
than a school function.

Maybe they were all high school dropouts, roaming the streets instead of reading books.

I don't think they were in High School.

I always wondered whether Tony was Italian? Any ideas?

He's meant to be Polish-American. Tony is short for Anton.

Kinda shows our age when we're wondering what young adults are doing at a school gym. What else were they to do? Its not like they had Facebook, Twitter or YouTube back then.

It is also difficult for me to answer this question. We didn't live at that time. Let everything that was in high school stay there. I have enough of my problems now, I recently wrote for the university about diversity, I used https://studymoose.com/free-essays/diversity for this. I want to say that all this was in the 1960s. It is better to ask those who know really about it.

Thanks for information

I fondly remember when I was in high school. This is the best time. Being in college, I also want to feel all the freedom of student life. That's why I turn https://www.essaywritinglab.co.uk/write-my-essay/ to First, I liked that they have friendly support who always answered all my questions and solved any problems I had. But the main thing for me personally is that there is a strict policy against plagiarism. That is, I received an absolutely unique paper. This is great.
