The show itself has been ultimately very disappointing to me, but the score is absolutely incredible.
The album for episode 8 is one of the best film music albums I've listened to in a while. So many great variations of every major theme from the whole show, and great new themes like the choral passage in the ending montage that was teased in episodes 2 and 7, and the really fun choir & percussion motif for Sauron and Galadriel's duel.
And "The Sun Yet Shines" is just one of the best finale & end credits tracks in a long while
Having finished the season, I have to say I really enjoyed it...and the outstanding score from McCreary is a big part of it...he just knocked it out of the park. I've been waiting for whatever "Durin's Bane" underscored for months and was not disappointed...truly epic!

This show is a disaster. Even terrific score and a great CGI - the only two positive aspects of this production - cannot save it.
And this music will be lauded in a few years for the best television music of the decades.
Not so sure about the score itself this season, during dramatic action scenes I noticed in the last few episodes I just hear restatements of the main theme over and over again.
I fell in love with the spoken songs on the soundtrack this season though. Just marvellous.
One thing I must say: I find the recording quality of these scores (both seasons 1 and 2) a bit strange. Not cramped or squashed necessarily, but I don't think they sound especially great. TV budget orchestra / recording? Not quite sure but something feels continually off. Is it just me?!

I'm not sure which "main theme" you mean. There's many themes and they are used for the characters and places. When they get more action their themes get more air time.
I love the track The Sun Yet Shines. I think the main theme is Galadriel's theme which plays in that track at .25 and from 2:19 through 3:01.
Don't be calling me crazy, but when I heard her theme in season 1, I kept thinking that I had heard that short motif or theme before. No, Bear didn't plagiarize, but that short motif reminded me of another soundtrack. You can hear that motif or short theme in Addison's A Bridge Too Far. (It is somewhat in the march and in the slower parts.) I have Elf ears.
